Job Description:
The Legal Aid Society, the nation’s largest and oldest public defense and civil legal services provider, is dedicated to ensuring that no individual is denied the right to equal justice. We are seeking a Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer to provide vision and leadership to our DEI efforts.
The Position:
The Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer will report directly to the Attorney-in-Chief and CEO and will be responsible for ensuring that DEI is integrated into The Legal Aid Society’s strategic planning, culture, and processes.
Responsibilities:
Internal Community Engagement:
- Partner with HR to strengthen an inclusive and diverse internal culture.
- Maintain an understanding of staff working conditions and experiences.
- Collaborate with the Communications team to embed DEI values in messaging.
- Create and implement mandatory DEI training programs.
- Develop a framework for respectful conversations regarding DEI topics.
- Serve as a resource for staff experiencing discrimination.
- Foster a culture of inclusion and respect across all levels.
- Advise the executive leadership team on DEI-related issues.
- Support the creation of the DEI vision in partnership with relevant units.
Accountability, Metrics & Execution:
- Establish and communicate clear DEI goals and initiatives.
- Utilize data to evaluate the effectiveness of DEI initiatives.
- Partner with leaders to respond to DEI challenges.
- Create systems for regular updates on DEI progress.
Supervision & Management:
- Assess current DEI operations and propose necessary changes.
- Supervise DEI operations and the Program Manager.
- Manage the department budget effectively.
- Support staff engagement in DEI initiatives.

Additional Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of ten years of relevant experience in DEI leadership; JD or master’s degree preferred.
- Proven track record of leading DEI initiatives in large organizations.
- Experience in developing and implementing strategic DEI plans.
- Deep understanding of systemic discrimination and DEI frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to create inclusive environments.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills.
- Proficiency in using data to track DEI progress.
- Ability to build relationships with stakeholders.
- Experience in change management and leadership.
- Experience in building learning systems that support DEI principles.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary Range: $180,000-$205,000. The Legal Aid Society offers a generous benefits package.
