GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
To be responsible for psychiatric services of a clinical program in the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH) and/or Eleanor Slater Hospital (ESH); to provide direct patient psychiatric care as assigned; to make daily rounds; to be responsible for the maintenance of standards of psychiatric care and treatment for such services of a clinical program; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Chief of Psychiatric Services from whom assignments are received, with wide latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgement; work is reviewed through conferences and/or reports for conformance to policies and objectives and/or adherence to accepted psychiatric practices and techniques.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
As assigned, to plan, organize, supervise and review the work of a staff of physicians and others engaged in patient care and treatment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To provide direct patient psychiatric care as assigned.
- To be responsible for admission, assessment and diagnosis, acute or chronic treatment, psychiatric (depending on the specialty and training of the doctor), geriatric and rehabilitation services, and discharge planning for assigned patients, or any outpatient, follow-up clinical services as needed or assigned.
- To conduct regularly scheduled team meetings with physician/psychiatrist colleagues and members of other related services within the healthcare system to discuss and evaluate new admissions, problem cases and potential discharges or transfers.
- To administer and/or prescribe appropriate clinical care and treatment involving difficult or complex cases.
- To make daily rounds and to supervise and review the work of psychiatrists and others engaged in providing clinical care and treatment to patients.
- To evaluate patient care and treatment in terms of results obtained and recommend new programs of care and treatment as necessary.
- To instruct staff psychiatrists and physicians in training through lectures, demonstration clinics, staff conferences and on-the-job clinical experience.
- To maintain medical or psychiatric skills through participation in continuing education and maintenance of certification activities in their specialty/subspecialty.
- To do related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:
A thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques in the field of general psychiatry or psychiatric subspecialty; the ability to detect, analyze, evaluate and interpret clinical symptoms of disorders; the ability to handle difficult or complex types of cases; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and associates, patients and family members, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Graduation from a medical school of recognized standing supplemented by advanced study in a field of psychiatry.
Experience: Successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved residency in the field of psychiatry.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must meet established requirements of the Rhode Island Department of Health to practice medicine in Rhode Island, hold an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Rhode Island, and maintain these requirements as a condition of employment. Must possess and maintain a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration and Rhode Island controlled substance registration. Must be American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology eligible or Board certified in psychiatry.
