Position Summary
This position is accountable for the planning, directing, and controlling all aspects of the Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Central Equipment Services (CES) departments in providing medical equipment support and management services to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Miller Children’s Hospital in accordance with all government regulatory and Joint Commission requirements and standard clinical practices. The Director is also responsible for the management of the BME department at Community Hospital Long Beach (CHLB).
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Managing Biomedical Engineering [BME] and Central Equipment Services [CES] staff (recruiting, training, assigning, managing and assessing, staff development). Includes one administrative secretary, one lead Biomedical technician, eight Biomedical equipment technicians [BME], one CES supervisor, one CES coordinator, and twelve equipment support technicians [ESS].
- Consulting and assisting in the management of medical device technology with other leadership colleagues in both medical centers under current operational requirements and in future medical center expansion programs.
- Problem Solving (analyzing and implementing effective solutions), Reporting (to include adverse equipment events, manufacturer and FDA equipment alerts, and other mandated reporting events) in collaboration with Risk Management and regulatory agencies.
- Budget (monitoring, planning, and assisting in creating and administering the department's operations budget).
- Policy development and review.
- Communicating (participation in patient safety, disaster preparedness, risk management, and other clinical support groups).
- Self Development (attend courses, outside reading, in-house education, seminars). Maintain and develop the medical equipment management program and its computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
- Maintain the proper levels of equipment and supplies delivered throughout the medical centers to ensure prompt and accurate deliveries.
- Management of all non-hospital owned medical equipment rented, leased, or contracted to the medical centers.
- Advise and participate in the selection of medical equipment used and requested by the medical center.
- Promote and expand the integration of medical devices into the electronic medical record system (EPIC) as requested and collaborated with Information Services and the MC*21 team.
*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
- Five Minimum 3 years’ successful experience responsible for multiple cost centers and programs.
- Engineering with Biomedical emphasis or equivalent clinical engineering degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years experience in managing a Biomedical Engineering department in an acute health care facility.
- BS in Healthcare administration may be approved by Human Resources and Engineering VP as reviewed for experience factors.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Minimum AS degree in Electronics with ICC/AAMI Certification in Biomedical Engineering Technology, BS in Electrical.
