The Lead, Relational Database Services will provide senior expertise to support the management and administration of relational databases in the Enterprise Database Services team within Infrastructure Services. This role involves shaping the strategic direction and operational excellence of relational database management across the University by designing, implementing, and maintaining advanced database systems to ensure data integrity, security, and performance.
The Lead will provide expert technical guidance and mentorship to the team while developing optimized database schemas, executing performance tuning, implementing robust backup and recovery procedures, and ensuring compliance. The Lead will also participate in monitoring database health, resolving issues, and managing user access. The Lead will collaborate closely with development teams to optimize database structures and queries, troubleshoot database issues, and ensure efficient data retrieval and storage. Additionally, the Lead will drive initiatives that have broad impact, leveraging relational database technologies to support the University’s strategic goals and enhance overall data management capabilities.
The Lead will positively impact UCSF’s operations and culture by ensuring UCSF’s IT database infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the University’s mission. This role will execute UCSF’s vision while modeling UCSF’s culture and values.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $113,500 - $258,100 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
- 7+ years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: information technology, database administration, software development.
- Extensive experience managing and administrating various database management systems (DBMS) such as Oracle, SQL, MySQL, or PostgreSQL, including tasks such as database installation, configuration, performance tuning, and monitoring.
- Expert-level understanding of query optimization techniques, indexing strategies, and database performance tuning. Experience with performance monitoring tools and troubleshooting performance issues.
- In-depth knowledge of database security best practices. Experience implementing security measures such as user access controls, encryption, and data masking. Familiarity with data privacy regulations and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) highly desirable.
- Advanced ability to interpret, analyze, and apply pertinent policies, procedures, regulations, and requirements.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate work assignments to small teams.
- Demonstrated experience presenting technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Advanced project management skills and ability to delegate responsibility, track project progress, supervise others, and advise on competing priorities.
- Significant experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
- Proven ability to delegate solutions when appropriate to the proper resources. Demonstrated understanding of how decisions affect teams. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity.
- Extensive experience cultivating an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
