The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Independence Mental Health Institute (IMHI) are seeking a full-time Psychiatrist to join their interdisciplinary team. This position provides opportunity for professional development, leadership advancement, life-long learning, and collaboration with various providers and public and private partners.
IMHI provides inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults, adolescents, and children. The hospital’s mission is to treat Iowans with psychiatric illness and return them to their communities as soon as possible. The hospital serves patients throughout Iowa and embodies a public sector and safety net approach to care. IMHI has an operating capacity of 20 adult beds and 36 child/adolescent beds. A Psychiatrist with experience and competence treating children and adolescents is preferred.
Primary responsibilities of this Psychiatrist position include:
- Provide direct patient care on one of the three inpatient psychiatric units, with an average caseload of approximately 8-10 patients. The Psychiatrist can practice both psychotherapy and medication management without restrictions. Advanced practice providers are available to assist in case-load management.
- Actively participate as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team in collaboration with medical, nursing, psychological, social work, and other health specialties. The Psychiatrist is the clinical leader of the interdisciplinary team of highly skilled professionals.
- Providing advanced clinical practice to individuals, groups, and families; conduct ongoing assessment including health and developmental history, psychosocial history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests.
- Review, evaluate, and document patient response to care; assess patient medical/nursing/educational needs and provide both formal and informal teaching; effectively involve patient, family, and significant others in plan of care.
- Work collaboratively with administrative, medical, and other clinical departments to expand and implement evidence-based modalities of care including dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) skills and trauma-responsive care.
- Participate in preceptor work with medical students, psychiatry residents, and psychiatry fellows through the State’s public-sector psychiatry residency/fellowship program delivered in partnership with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
- Fulfill a 40-hour per week position with on-call responsibilities. On-call responsibilities are required and receive additional compensation. On-call is normally scheduled one or two nights per week and one weekend per month.
- There are no RVU or insurance billing requirements of psychiatrists.

Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of an internship program and licensure as a physician by the State of Iowa.
