The Milton and Carroll Petrie Department of Urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has long been a leader in clinical practice, education, and research, where we perform complex procedures using robotics, laparoscopy, and endoscopy as part of our extensive, minimally invasive urologic surgery program.
We provide state-of-the-art services for the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and management of a wide variety of urologic conditions, including genitourinary cancers. Consistently voted among the country’s top doctors and departments of urology, our team has been recognized for our depth of knowledge, breadth of experience, and compassion for patients. We are experts in performing open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery; our robotics practice is one of the busiest. Fellow physicians across the country and worldwide routinely seek us for consultations, intervention, and education.
Our Department has undergone a significant expansion beginning in 2013 under the leadership of our Chair, Ash Tewari, MBBS, MCh, FRCS. The recruitment of surgeon-scientists in the areas of kidney cancer, bladder cancer, kidney stones, and endourology have resulted in our ability to successfully address diagnostic and treatment challenges at the bench and the bedside. New medical directors for our Interventional Urology and Focal Therapy program and our Men’s Health program assure that we are at the forefront of urologic advances that help patients newly diagnosed with cancers and those seeking comprehensive and integrated preventive men’s healthcare.
Importantly, our commitment to genomics studies has resulted in the establishment of dedicated laboratories where research fellows and postdoctoral students actively engage in clinical trials and pre-clinical analyses to solve some of the most important questions clinicians and scientists are grappling with today, including how to stage prostate cancer and develop truly personalized treatment regimens. We are supported by major funding grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the nation’s primary funder of medical research, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation, among other sources.
