The Unit Director supervises two critical care areas: the 8ICU Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (8 beds) and the 11NICU Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (16 beds) with an annual budget of $20 million and 105 FTE. The units are managed as one staff serving the same patient populations. UCSF is designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and the Unit Director has direct and indirect responsibilities to ensure high levels of care and regulatory compliance to maintain this designation.
Responsibilities include designing and overseeing nursing and administrative operations in large and/or multiple patient care areas. The Unit Director is accountable for the overall administrative planning and coordination of staffing, fiscal, and material resources. This role involves assisting with the development and implementation of multiple high-level quality and safety improvement initiatives and policy updates.
Involved in ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and provision of patient care delivery in assigned nursing units or areas. The Unit Director promotes an environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and the exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. This role is accountable for the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of patient care and involves consulting and collaborating with other health care professionals to coordinate the management of patient care. The Unit Director serves as a resource to staff, physicians, students, and others.
