About NGAUS: The association includes nearly 45,000 current or former Guard officers. It was created in 1878 to provide unified National Guard representation in Washington. In their first productive meeting after Reconstruction, militia officers from the North and South formed the association with the goal of obtaining better equipment and training by petitioning Congress for more resources. Today, 138 years later, NGAUS has the same mission.
General Statement of Duties
The VP, Government Affairs is responsible for directing the activities of the Legislative Department to include: strategy development; lobbying; coalition building and outreach; assistance to stakeholders in a broad range of policy and program areas; policy analysis and implementation; and consultation and advice to the President for various program, department and administrative issues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Manages/Supervises the legislative directorate
2. Develops legislative strategy and tactics for annual priorities; tracks legislation and provides strategic guidance to ensure NGAUS achieves its legislative objectives
3. Develops relationships with Federal legislators to influence Federal legislation and policy
advancing the positions of NGAUS also Coordinates efforts with organizations that share our legislative interests, such as National Guard Bureau Legislative Liaison (NGB/LL), Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (EANGUS) and The Military Coalition (TMC)
4. Responsible for preparing and presenting reports and briefings that ensure awareness and attainment of legislative objectives
5. Coordinates state meetings with NGAUS staff; supports state association legislative efforts; coordinates legislative action for state associations in coordination with legislative staff and Communications Directorate
6. Responsible for the execution of resolutions process with NGAUS legislative staff; to include activities at the general conference resolutions committee meetings and relevant task force meetings
7. Formulates and executes the legislative budget
8. Responsible for developing regular updates and inputs for wider dissemination to NGAUS members through Washington Report e-blast, the NATIONAL GUARD magazine and blog entries, among others
9. Encourages and promotes teamwork and interdepartmental communication among NGAUS personnel in order to develop and maintain an efficient and responsive organization
10. Other duties as assigned

· Capitol Hill policy experience
· Supervisory experience
· National Guard service preferred
· A strong, comprehensive knowledge of NGAUS, the National Guard Bureau and the National Guards
of the States, Territories and the District of Columbia
· Creative, energetic, and self-motivating
· Ability to multi-task, be organized and flexible, and prioritize responsibilities
· Superior interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
· Business Acumen, strategic planning, and resource management skills
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree or greater and related experience and/or training
