Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) Postdoctoral Fellow - 102860
Division: AM-Applied Mathematics and Computational Research
Berkeley Lab’s Applied Mathematics Computational Research Division (AMCR) has an immediate opening in the Quantum Information Science and Technology Group (QuIST) for a Postdoc Fellow in support of The Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) project as well as future superconducting based Quantum Information Science and Technology efforts.
The AQT program is focused on constructing, enhancing, operating, and maintaining an open, fully accessible gate-based quantum computer. Our technology platform is based on superconducting quantum circuit processors, and we aim to generate the detailed experimental findings needed to resolve foundational questions in quantum information science, and to guide near-term hardware and algorithm co-design.
What You Will Do:
- Specialized research in conception and execution of quantum algorithms on superconducting hardware.
- Design and conduct state-of-the-art experiments using superconducting quantum processors for quantum information science.
- Troubleshoot noise processes on quantum hardware and design and implement mitigation strategies.
- Validate, analyze, and interpret experimental data.
- Develop algorithms for near-term hardware based on critical evaluation of the literature, and original thinking.
- Design quantum simulations on superconducting processors for physics, chemistry, and computer science.
- Firmware development & programming tools to interface with FPGA-based electronics.
- Quantum verification and validation.
- Design and fabrication of superconducting devices.
What is Required:
- Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience independently planning and completing projects.
- Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and verbal presentation of scientific results.
- Knowledge of quantum information science related to one or more of the responsibilities/research areas listed above.
- Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.
- Ability to direct the work of technical support staff or students.
Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to prepare periodic updates (written and oral) for internal and external reviews or reports.
- Experience operating and maintaining a dilution refrigerator.
- Experience using Python based programming tools.
Notes:
- This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
- The full salary range of this position is between $6,722 to $7,792 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- This position requires substantial on-site presence, but is eligible for a flexible work mode, and hybrid schedules may be considered. Hybrid work is a combination of performing work on-site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA and some telework. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
