The Chief of Urology - Toledo has primary responsibility for the clinical work within the Section of Urology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital - Toledo including access to care, quality of care, and patient safety. The NCH Toledo Section Chief provides this leadership through effective communication, interdisciplinary team building, strategy development, goal setting, and mentoring. The NCH Toledo Section Chief will partner with Nationwide Children’s Hospital Urology Department Chief on administrative duties as assigned, including but not limited to developing hospital-related budgets (capital, revenue, expense, and staffing) and monitoring quality and financial metrics. The NCH Toledo Section Chief is expected to work closely and collaboratively with clinical unit (inpatient or outpatient), nursing leaders, and hospital administration to ensure seamless multidisciplinary leadership as it pertains to staffing, flow, and clinical operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Activities:
Develop and lead a pediatric Urology program in Toledo with superb outcomes, innovative research, and outstanding education programs. Serve as the principal architect for clinical, academic, research and administrative/business alignment strategies while holding accountability for the Section of Pediatric Urology across the enterprise in Toledo, OH. Assist with further developing the NCH Toledo Section of Urology infrastructure in order to position the organization in a way that creates lasting value. Actively partner with fellow Chiefs in the leadership and development of strategic priorities for NCH Surgery and NCH Toledo Surgery. Ensure the Section of Pediatric Urology in Toledo has the “right people” in the “right positions” so that human capital is calibrated to maximize the mission and vision of the Section and NCH Surgery. Articulate a strategy and corresponding plan that will result in NCH Toledo Urology Program being viewed as an innovative, pediatric healthcare delivery leader and extension of NCH Urology Program in Columbus. Evaluate and optimize the care management approach, process of disease management, patient satisfaction and safety, and develop processes to assure appropriateness of care including clinical outcomes, protocols, length of stay and ancillary resource utilization.
Academic:
Fully support the academic and educational objectives of the Department of Surgery. Provide educational leadership within the field of pediatric Urology and children’s surgery. Offer high level pediatric urology training for the Urology residents of the University of Toledo urology residency program. Partner with co-faculty at NCH Columbus and Dayton Children’s Hospital for multi-center research productivity. Lead, develop and help prioritize goals and objectives of future Toledo faculty for continued professional growth, education and skills development including the definition and measurement of outcomes, which are consistent with the overall NCH organizational strategy and mission.
Quality:
Actively participate in quality and safety initiatives. Evaluate clinical operations, both inpatient and outpatient, and implement programs that drive exceptional patient safety and quality performance to meet patient demand, and optimal access for patients and their families in a most efficient and fiscally responsible manner. Establish and support a program for clinical quality improvement, patient safety and patient satisfaction. Develop and implement best practice standards, including innovative models of practice, patient satisfaction and quality initiatives.
Leadership:
Maximize on the vast array of resources and expertise available system-wide and at NCH. Collaborate and consult with Urology Department Chief as well as the resourceful and supportive corporate executive leaders. Develop a work structure that allows physicians to balance clinical delivery while allowing time for research and academic activity. In collaboration with fellow NCH Surgery and overall NCH leadership, build the strategic education and research plan for the Section and assist the staff in identifying and facilitating outside funding sources and opportunities. Encourage, support and review clinical training and education for medical students, residents and fellows. Seek opportunities to create alliances with the provider community and actively participate in efforts to raise the visibility and recognition of NCH Toledo Pediatric Urology Program throughout the local community. Provide and facilitate counsel and advice on physician matters, and intervene and moderate all major physician-physician, physician-patient, and physician-staff concerns. Support the NCH Surgery and Pediatrics physicians and overall team with their personal and professional development. Monitor physician practice patterns, and present data to physicians and committees for review, analysis and interpretation. Develop an organizational culture that emphasizes collaboration and a sense of mutual responsibility and accountability for performance across the Section.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Minimum qualifications include an M.D. or D.O. degree, board certification or eligibility in Urology and eligibility for unrestricted medical license in the State of Ohio.
