Who we are at Osmo:
Osmo is a digital olfaction company, on a mission to give computers a sense of smell to improve the health and wellbeing of human life. Why? Our sense of smell both enriches and saves lives, and has a deep and direct connection to our emotions and memory. Vision and hearing have been digitized, but not scent. It’s time we solve this. We’re bringing an unprecedented combination of software, data, hardware and capital to the historic challenge of giving computers a sense of smell.
We believe in the power of automation and carefully applied AI/ML to solve problems that are beyond what the unaided human mind can tackle on its own. In the first phase of our development, we are using our map of odor along with cutting-edge generative AI to create the next generation of aroma molecules (e.g., the ingredients in the fragrances we wear and the products we use). Beyond fragrance, machine olfaction has applications across many industries, including manufacturing, military, medicine, and more. Working for Osmo means solving problems using digital olfaction for these customers. We're a hybrid company with a laboratory and center-of-mass in New York, NY and offices in Somerville, MA.
Osmo is seeking a finance-savvy Chief Operating Officer (COO/CFO) to join our management team. You will report to our Founder/CEO and run Osmo's internal metronome, with both heart (strong interpersonal skills, proven motivator, and growth-oriented mindset) and head (analytical, metrics-driven approach). You will play a crucial role in adding rigor and repeatable processes to our business as we scale, and will be responsible for strategic finance, financial planning and analysis, compensation program design and implementation, capital raising and capital structure management, investor relations, and corporate development. You are a detail-oriented communicator with a strong history of execution (building and deploying financial models, reporting dashboards, performance analyses, and compensation plans; and closing scaled capital raises and acquisitions).
Key Responsibilities:
- Owning organizational and financial roadmap design, with an analytical eye: research & product planning with technical leads, blended with financial planning & analysis.
- Own the internal metronome of our project plans, driving results with strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
- Managing our ongoing investment in growth: implementing a plan, holding the organization accountable, and forecasting incremental capital needs.
- Raising capital (potentially across multiple instruments): negotiating and drafting securities purchase agreements and credit agreements, optimizing and explaining the risks and trade-offs on economic and non-economic terms.
- Structuring organizations, spin-outs, and holdcos, and overseeing legal and financial setup and monitoring.
- Engineering financial and interpersonal (e.g. recognition/status) incentives, and advising on internal and multi-subsidiary org design.
- Owning day-to-day investor relations and reporting.
- Building a framework for corporate development at Osmo and managing deal pipeline and execution.
Required Qualifications:
- 5-10 years operational experience, ideally in a company with a strong R&D component.
- Undergraduate degree in Economics/Finance or similar with 5-10 years experience in finance (investment banking, public or private equity investing, or credit investing – or any combination thereof) and 5+ years experience in an operating role (FP&A, strategic finance, operations, or corporate development) at a high-growth technology company.
- Demonstrated ability to set a financial plan and hold your organization to it, including forecasting/managing through up-cycles and down-cycles.
- Demonstrated track record of raising equity and debt capital at scale.
- Experience setting and managing a company incentive plan, including benchmarking.
- Comfort with rapidly evolving technology: you don’t have to be a scientist, engineer, or chemist, but you need to understand what is plausible, possible, and impossible in our technical domains.
- Ability to communicate with a variety of cross-functional partners and translate their needs into organized frameworks and roadmaps for the business.
- Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple complex projects concurrently.
- Ability to work on-site 5 days a week in NYC.
Ways to stand out from the crowd:
- Strong investor/Director relationships and references.
- Passion for managing and scaling high growth, dynamic businesses.
- You should have a few battle scars and be able to articulate the lessons that accompany them.
- Experience with ‘hub-and-spoke’ go-to-market models, having either executed or participated.
Nice-to-have:
- Familiarity and experience with implementation of modern FP&A software (e.g. Pigment) and Corporate Development software (e.g. Deal Room).
Expected Salary: $265,000 - $350,000
Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401k and more.
