Department Summary:
MITRE’s Software Engineering Innovation Center is one of the government’s largest resources dedicated entirely to software engineering; delivering capabilities that modernize legacy systems, that prototype ways to address unmet mission needs, and that deliver advanced functionality pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
As a Data Scientist Lead, you’ll apply your expertise to design, analyze, and implement software and data-driven solutions, leading and shaping software and data focused projects. You will advise on the adoption of advanced analytics techniques on a large scale, and lead projects that architect, implement, and operate data-driven systems. Often, you’ll work alongside our government sponsors to create lasting impact in fields like cybersecurity, healthcare, aviation, defense, enterprise transformation, and more.
At this level, some examples of what you can expect in the role include:
- Leading the development of scalable and resilient data analysis/visualization environments that allow your sponsor to securely interact with your team’s solutions.
- Collaborating with internal and sponsor teams to ensure data privacy and compliance.
- Acting as the primary point of contact between MITRE and the sponsor to cultivate a trusted advisor relationship.
- Recognizing opportunities to enhance data-driven decision-making by offering your expertise to projects.
- Writing code to automate data processing and analysis in various IT environments.
Basic Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of experience in a programming language like Python, R, C#, Java, etc., with a focus on data manipulation and analysis.
- At least 2 years of data science leadership experience, including planning, organizing, staffing, and executing software projects of at least 3 staff, leveraging Agile methodologies and distributed version control.
- A history of strong verbal and written communication through code, code reviews, data visualizations, documentation, and presentations.
- Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in domains like web/mobile, AI, cybersecurity, or other related areas.
- Experience in organizational change, acquisition, or policy governance related to data-driven solutions adoption.
- A pre-existing Secret or Top-Secret clearance is preferred.
Some other skills or qualifications-of-interest successful candidates might have:
- Experience securing data systems to compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA, NIST, FIPS).
- Experience using data processing and analysis tools, such as Apache Hadoop, PySpark, SQL and NoSQL Databases.
- Experience with pipeline-based data-processing using tools like Nifi, Airflow.
- Experience administering data systems, cloud environments, networks, or databases.
- Experience with developing and deploying software using container-based solutions like Docker or Kubernetes.
