Position Title: Immunohematology Reference Laboratory Technician II
FLSA: Full-time (40 hours/week), Non-exempt (hourly) plus benefits
Salary: $25.25 - $31.50 per hour
Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8 hour shift

San Diego Blood Bank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization also operating as Southern California Blood Bank. We serve hospitals in San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange Counties. We are the primary blood provider to Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and the safety net for hospitals in our region. Every year, more than 150,000 units of blood provided by San Diego Blood Bank are transfused into patients of all ages, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds throughout Southern California. These patients are struggling with life-threatening medical conditions including cancer and other blood disorders, severe burns, organ transplants, emergency surgery, trauma, childbirth complications and more.
- Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations.
- Directly communicates with hospitals and internal customers.
- Assures appropriate storage of all blood components.
- Operates and maintains critical laboratory equipment.
- Reports and assists in investigating deviation reports via the Quality Management System.
- Participates in department meetings and educational programs.
- Evaluates acceptability of incoming samples and performs electronic data entry to ensure appropriate testing is performed.
- Records and maintains accurate manual and electronic records.
- Assist with validations, special projects, and new process developments.
- Monitors and maintains supply inventory levels.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.
- Assist with morning reports.
- Processes Reference Hold Units.
- Runs Ethnic reports.
- Pulls retention tubes for testing.
- Assists with Donor red cell antibodies - worksheets, logs, labeling.
- Prepares adsorbing cells.
- Clerical functions - answer telephone, supply inventory, copying, filing.
- Assist with special projects.
- Freezes rare cells and serum.
- Manufactures Rh controls for internal and external customers.
- Prepares positive and negative antibody quality controls.
- Documents and completes donor antibody reports.
- Maintains reagent and consumable inventory- monthly count, ordering, receipt, quarantine, and release.
- Perform daily, weekly, quarterly, and yearly equipment maintenance as needed.
- Ship IRL samples, units, and perform billing.
- Interacts with clients in a professional and friendly manner.
- Understands and adheres to the policies, procedures and standards as developed as part of the San Diego Blood Bank Compliance Program.
- Perform other related duties assigned or requested.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications)- Strong interest in medical field or life sciences
- Bachelor’s of Science degree in a related field from an accredited college or university
- Two to three years of related laboratory experience including experience with filtering RBC, irradiation, plasma processing, sample management, and quality control on blood products
- Ability to use general laboratory equipment, such as but not limited to centrifuges, heat sealer, sterile docking device, refrigerators/freezers, sterile hood, cell counter, etc.
- Ability to use Blood Establishment Computer System (BECS)
- Must be detail-oriented, well organized, and display good time management skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work under pressure and stressful situations
- Must be able to stand or sit long hours.
- Must be able to work on a computer 4 – 8 hours a day.
- May be required to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, written and oral.
