Position Purpose:
Responsible for managing a team of tax attorneys and professionals in the overall achievement of the Tax Department's goals. Responsible for managing end to end sales tax controversy strategy and execution, up to and including litigation. May be responsible in specific instances for providing legal advice relating to tax planning, research, compliance, accounting and/or audit defense, as well as special projects and cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- 60% Providing legal counsel on Tax Planning, Accounting, Research, Compliance, Audit Defense, and Government Relations as needed to meet the goals of the Department. May serve as principal contact on one or more projects with governmental officials, outside counsel, and business partners. Lead special studies to determine tax and legal risk implications of company operations. Responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely documentation of legal/technical analysis supporting ASC 450 and FIN 48 and other legal matters, where applicable. May serve as liaison between SSC and subsidiary businesses in the US and internationally.
- 20% Participation on cross-functional teams serving as a subject-matter expert and legal advisor.
- 20% Coaching and mentoring of associates in the department.
Direct Manager/Direct Reports:
Reports to Sr. Director – Tax Counsel. Accountable for direct supervision of the work activities of others. In addition to personnel issues – including selection, termination, performance appraisal and professional development of subordinates.
Travel Requirements:
Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time.
Physical Requirements:
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.
Working Conditions:
Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be eighteen years of age or older.
- Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
- Must have completed a Juris Doctor program at an accredited law school.
- Must have an active license to practice law in at least one state.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 8-10 years experience preferred.
- Experience in tax legal matters including sales tax audit and controversy resolution, tax policy and legal research and analysis.
- Demonstrate technical tax skills appropriate for the years of experience in the one or more tax disciplines. Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage and implement multiple complex projects, people management, and communications to both technical and non-technical audiences. Proven analytical and problem resolution skills.
Minimum Education:
The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a Juris Doctor degree program or higher.
Minimum Years of Work Experience: 8
Preferred Years of Work Experience: No additional years of experience.
Minimum Leadership Experience: Have experience leading at least one junior attorney.
Preferred Leadership Experience: Experience leading one or more junior attorneys and large, complex issues/projects
Certifications
- An undergraduate degree in accounting, with an emphasis in tax, or a closely related discipline, and a Juris Doctor.
- Must have an active license to practice law in at least one state.
