INTRODUCTION
Under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, the Medical Director is responsible for the provision of care and coordination of the daily activities of the various medical disciplines of the Unity Health Care Health Center team, serving as the liaison between Unity and the community. The Medical Director ensures the delivery of quality, safe medical services at a clinical site, including supervision of all providers working at the designated site.
MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supports the health center and organization in contributing to the quadruple aim: improving health outcomes, improving patient experience, supporting care team well-being, and the financial sustainability of the organization.
Health Outcomes:
- Performs and serves as a role model for patient care and medical provider duties.
- Supervises providers at the site to ensure safe provision of care and compliance with Unity Health Care policies and procedures.
- Leads quality improvement initiatives at the Center and engages team members.
- Reviews available data reports and analysis to develop action plans to achieve the center's goals and shares relevant information with providers.
- Ensures clinical best practices are shared at the Center and that providers are optimizing CME.
- Conducts root cause analyses of incident reports to identify issues and potential systemic solutions.
- Manages the peer review process at their site in accordance with protocol, including reviewing provider charts at around 45 and 90 days, specifically re-evaluating charts of providers not meeting minimum standards and providing feedback.
- Assists with the identification of supply and equipment needs.
Patient Experience:
- Reviews patient experience data with providers and leadership team, translating it into action steps to ensure a welcoming, patient-centered environment.
- Investigates patient complaints, particularly those with a quality of care concern, and provides feedback, counseling, or action when appropriate.
- Actively recruits and hires appropriately trained and competent (including culturally competent), mission-driven providers.
- Collaborates with site leaders to ensure workflows are optimized and efficient.
- Coordinates provider schedules, including verification and approval of leave and coverage of scheduled and unscheduled absences.
- Collaborates with leadership team to identify and implement opportunities to improve patient flow.
- Collaborates with the HCD to improve non-medical systems procedures, including registration, appointments, and patient flow.
Care Team Well-being:
- Recruits and on-boards new providers into the Center by developing their site-specific onboarding plan and providing regular check-ins.
- Collaborates with site leadership to build teamwork among all team members, huddles and debriefs regularly with leadership team, and has regular problem-solving sessions.
- Conducts monthly provider meetings at the site.
- Develops provider schedules, including leave requests and work hours, to ensure smooth operations of the clinic.
- Ensures providers have manageable workloads and necessary support.
- Promotes and supports innovation and wellness culture.
- Ensures providers feel supported and have agency to improve their practice.
- Meets regularly with staff to identify opportunities for support.
- Provides recognition to providers and team members performing well.
- Teaches and coaches staff members to work at their highest ability.
- Conducts provider performance reviews and provides feedback to other site managers.
Financial Health:
- Monitors site productivity and identifies opportunities to optimize visit volume.
- Manages provider capacity, no-shows, and scheduling templates.
- Reviews and follows up on unlocked notes reports.
- Ensures appropriate staffing.
- Monitors walk-in volume and scheduling template utilization.
- Collaborates with site and organizational leadership in the development and management of the site’s budget.
Other Duties:
- Collaborates with Health Center Directors (HCDs) and Nurse Managers (NMs) on tasks involving overall clinic management.
- Communicates regularly with providers and staff about broader organizational initiatives, site initiatives, and processes.
- Contacts Specialty Directors for departmental issues.
- Participates in monthly Medical Directors’ meetings and Unity-wide QI meetings.
- Serves on committee(s) as assigned by the CMO (e.g., P&T, Infection Prevention).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a current DC License, CDS, and DEA registrations.
- For sites supporting residents, graduate of an accredited Medical School and Residency Program.
- Board eligible or board certified in area of specialty.
- Two (2) years of experience in an ambulatory care setting, with some contact with homeless patients preferred.
- Managerial experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
- Must be willing to accept “on call” duties on a regular rotation.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items such as books and paper is required.

RISKS
The position involves everyday risks and discomforts, requiring normal safety precautions typical of offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC health care sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. All medical services shall be provided according to medically accepted community standards of care. The employee shall provide evidence of a recent (within the past twelve (12) months) health assessment that includes a PPD and/or chest x-ray results.
