This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Lead Geophysicist (VP Level P14) for our Richmond, Virginia office. Be involved in projects with WSP’s Mining Group, Geotechnical and Tunneling Group, Geohazards Group, and Site Assessment and Remediation Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
Provide high-level technical assistance and guidance for the planning and cost estimation of surface and borehole geophysical investigations for shallow earth investigations (<10,000 ft).
Your Impact
- Develop detailed geophysical technical and cost proposals in response to RFPs.
- Write detailed field work plans to conduct seismic refraction surveys, active and passive multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) surveys, 2D electrical resistivity (ERI) surveys, self-potential surveys, electromagnetic and magnetic surveys, and borehole geophysical surveys.
- Review raw geophysical data and field notes for quality assurance and completeness, process geophysical raw field data to generate final processed data for interpretation and presentation in reports.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that present geophysical results and their interpretation.
- Oversee the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
- Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams in executing project work.
- Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future-ready solutions for clients.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, geophysics, or closely related discipline.
- 20+ years of experience working as an applied geophysicist in the USA.
- Proficient with geophysical research, investigation, technology, measurement tools, software, and techniques.
- Experience with the application of geophysical methods to characterize seepage at earthen dams and levees.
- Experience with the application of borehole geophysical methods to the characterization of groundwater flow in fractured bedrock.
- Experience with the application of geophysical methods to the characterization of mine leach pads.
- Specific experience with the Mount Sopris and Advanced Logic Technology line of borehole geophysical logging tools; their operation, application limits, and data processing requirements.
- Proficient with Advanced Logic Technology’s WellCad borehole logging software.
- Proficient with Geogiga’s Seismic Pro processing software, specifically, DW Tomo and Surface Plus.
- Proficient with Advanced Geosciences, Inc. EarthImager 2D resistivity and IP data inversion software.
- Experience with soil and rock drilling including direct-push, hollow-stem auger, and core drilling methods.
- Project management experience with small to high-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
- Experience in conducting geophysical surveys in accordance with ASTM guidelines and industry standards.
- Experience writing geophysical proposals, field work plans, and reports.
- Demonstrated high level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, and communication software, technology, and tools.
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most cost-effective responses that will minimize waste, prevent pollution, and conserve resources.
- Effective at coordinating and assertively directing others in the field such as subcontracted drillers, excavation contractors, utility locators, and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
