The Opportunity
The activities of Digital Strategy and Enablement (DSE) span multiple therapeutic areas in drug development, a wide range of data modalities, and collaborations with a variety of experts, all with the goal to develop innovative healthcare solutions for patients and society. With subject matter expertise and technology savviness, you will be a technical leader in implementing highly impactful digital enablement solutions applying AI in particular Large Language Models (LLM) to our business processes.
Your primary responsibility will be to drive the technical directions and to ensure strong business impacts. You will need to have the most updated knowledge of GenAI technologies and their applications in R&D and drug development. You will maintain a deep contextual knowledge of the business and technical domains, gaining insights from understanding both the working processes and needs of our business functions across PD, finding opportunities to leverage and scale explorative efforts from one area to others. As well, you will stay current with pharma and tech industrial trends and introduce to our organization emerging technologies that would benefit our business.
Key Responsibilities:
- You will translate the business needs into technical requirements and user stories to ensure delivery of impactful and user-friendly digital solutions.
- You will define the product concept, design the development strategy by evaluation both internal development feasibility and external acquisition opportunity.
- You will contribute technical leadership within and external to DSE including (but not limited to) current and new technologies, AI industry landscape, ways of working on engineering and analytics methodology etc. Key technologies and platforms in DSE include, but not limited to GenAI in particular LLMs, classical ML/DL, knowledge management and discovery, content creation and reuse, and operational data standards and governance.
- You will drive to achieve results - demonstrates curiosity and ability to learn new things, show initiative, welcome problems as a challenge; deliver solutions to technical problems.
- You will collaborate with global informatics, design and implement GenAI applications, tools, and processes that enable value creating solutions to simplify business operations. Partner with data/content generation and management teams to automate at scale curation and organization of structured and unstructured data and information.
Who You Are:
- You have a PhD in quantitative field (eg mathematics, statistics, computer science, EE, etc.), and/or adv. Life Sciences degree with significant computational experience, or equivalent, with 5+ year working experience in Data Science.
- You have experience in drug development/clinical development processes in the Pharma/biotech industry.
- You have experience in end-to-end data and AI product lifecycle.
- You have hands on in software development and programming using clustered compute environments on premise or in cloud.
Preferred Qualification:
- You have a sustained record of leading project teams to deliver in multiple areas. Track record of establishing successful internal collaborations and managing external technical vendors.
- You have the demonstrated entrepreneurial approach and self-direction, ability to teach others and willingness to learn new techniques. Evidence of business and technical competence.
- You have the ability to build strong reasons, technical requirements, solution architecture, data engineering design, computing/storage resource management, model development and evaluation, productization, and maintenance.
- You have experience in GenAI / Foundation Models, and classical ML/DL algorithms & frameworks e.g. pytorch, tensorflow and standard NLP techniques and LLM.
- You have experienced with multiple data modalities e.g. relational DB, images, free form texts.
- You have hands-on experience with productivity toolchain eg JIRA, enterprise git.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco California is $172,500 - $320,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
