The Opportunity
At Roche, we are working to make next-generation sequencing simple and accessible enough for routine use. By accelerating clinical research, streamlining workflows, and expanding assay menus, we are broadening access to genomic data and lowering barriers to routine use.
Roche Sequencing Solutions, a division of Roche Diagnostics, is seeking a talented Research Scientist to join our Sequencing Workflows and Applications Team. In this role, you will contribute to the early-stage research and development of cutting-edge, next-generation sequencing (NGS) liquid biopsy diagnostic assays. We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in conceptualizing and developing novel NGS workflows, working with diverse sample types and target analytes. The ideal candidate will be a creative problem-solver and a critical thinker, capable of fostering collaborative relationships across the organization to address technical challenges and drive innovative solutions.
Responsibilities
- You will contribute to projects with high potential for a global impact; and will keep abreast of advances in peer-reviewed publications and the marketplace; to develop a deep understanding of relevant techniques and their application to liquid biopsy for diagnostic assays.
- You will join a tight-knit local team of dedicated and curious scientists where you will act as a role model and mentor for junior colleagues.
- You will conceptualize, design, and execute experiments; working with bioinformatics colleagues to analyze data for both early-stage proof-of-concept research, and early development activities including workflow optimizations.
- You will proactively troubleshoot assays, resolve technical issues and challenges, and perform data interpretation by applying broad knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
- You will keep detailed records of all experiments and project-related information.
- You will present data to different audiences with the appropriate level of detail; you will participate in project meetings to communicate experimental details, key findings, conclusions, and implications to the project team; you will participate in group learning sessions.
- You will establish and maintain productive relationships with immediate team members and cross-functional collaborators.
This position is based on-site in Pleasanton, CA.

Who You Are:
(Required)
- You have a Master’s in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related field with 6+ yrs of relevant industry experience or a PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related field with 3+ years of relevant industry experience.
- You have a deep understanding of the molecular biology of library preparation for NGS, and have demonstrated experience designing and optimizing multiple different NGS workflows.
- You have strong interpersonal skills and are able to seamlessly collaborate with team members and cross-functional collaborators.
- You have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- You are action-oriented and excited to find solutions to complex, evolving problems; and have demonstrated experience as a creative problem solver and critical thinker.
Preferred:
- You have experience developing NGS assays from a range of human sample types.
- You have experience and in-depth knowledge of molecular cancer biology.
- You have experience working on the optimization and development of epigenetic workflows.
- You have experience working with a range of NGS instruments.
This position is based on-site in Pleasanton, CA.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Pleasanton, CA is $109,100 - $202,500. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
