Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Associate Director, the Lead Custodian will oversee custodial personnel in all aspects of housekeeping service including providing schedules, checking the employees' work progress, connecting employees to the appropriate resources, while supporting them and providing equipment/supplies as needed. The incumbent will regularly inform the supervisor of any issues of concern and will consistently check for work progress ensuring that the cleaning standards are met in accordance with HRLs expectations of quality customer service. The Lead will ensure the security of the HRL buildings by checking to assure they have been properly secured/locked. Encourage safe working procedures and report any safety hazards to the supervisor. This position works from Thursday to Monday.
Additionally, the incumbent is a working lead that provides custodial services and housekeeping support services for on and off Housing & Residential Life (HRLs) complexes. As needed, the incumbent will be responsible for the overall cleanliness of assigned buildings, floors, facilities, foyers, stairwells, including but not limited to cleaning student rooms, common areas, lounges, kitchens, and hallways; clean and disinfect bathrooms; strip and wax floors; clean windows; move furniture from one area to another; wash concrete areas outside of the buildings, execute the delivery and pickup of guest-requested items to and from guest rooms, maintain carts and manage a constant supply of clean linens for Summer Conference programs, ensuring closets are fully stocked and remove trash and dirty linens including cleaning and care of flooring (e.g. carpet, tile, etc.) high dusting, edging, scrubbing, cleaning of desks, and perform other related duties as required.
Furthermore, this position is responsible for providing services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life, retention, and graduation rate. This position uses a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communication and service efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Custodian - Oversee custodian workflow, conduct quality control inspections, assist with safety training, keep Material Safety Data Sheets current, track attendance, report absences to supervisor, assist custodians in the performance of their duties when necessary.
- Provide Custodial Services - Clean both interior and exterior windows, mop, sweep, scrub, strip, and buff wax floors, and sweep, dust mop, and wet mop vinyl flooring. Move furniture in bedrooms and common areas for deep cleaning, vacuum and sweep carpets, wash walls, remove tape, and wipe furniture. Additionally, wash and mend drapes, clean carpets with carpet extractors and spin bonnet buffer machines, and clean furniture upholstery. Ensure wash basins, countertops, sinks, water fountains, showers, bathtubs, urinals, toilet bowls, and bathroom floors are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Refill soap, paper towel, toilet tissue, seat covers, and sanitary napkin dispensers, empty trash and clean waste receptacles, and polish faucets, brass plates, and water fountains. Finally, clean and straighten public areas and vending machine areas.
- Operations - Check residence halls for damages and report any items that need repair. Inventory staff supplies and equipment and make sure supply orders are filled and equipment is working properly. Work closely with drape cleaning vendor to ensure that drapes are removed, cleaned, and installed properly.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
To excel in this custodial role, it is essential to consistently report to work on time, coordinate work projects, and direct and inspect subordinates’ work. Proficiency in using various floor care machines and correcting workmanship inaccuracies is crucial. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary for conveying information and completing reports. Maintaining high-quality custodial services, establishing cooperative working relationships, and working effectively as part of a team are vital. Experience in a multicultural university environment and knowledge of safe work practices are required, along with the ability to provide excellent customer service and perform timely custodial services.
Interact courteously with university staff and guests and follow fundamental custodial procedures. Skills in operating industrial and custodial equipment, lifting items up to 50 lbs., and working independently or as part of a team are essential. Flexibility to work overtime, holidays, evenings, or weekends is necessary. Performing various physical custodial duties and maintaining inventory of supplies and amenities are also required.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to two years of related custodial experience required.
• Working knowledge of all aspects of custodial cleaning and or general maintenance duties/services preferred.
• Minimum of two years’ experience leading small groups of individuals to successfully accomplish tasks preferred.
• Minimum of three years of previous custodial experience preferred.
Physical Summary
- Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.
Licenses / Certificates
Valid CA Driver's License required.
• Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on University business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,690 - $6,062 per month.
Excellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year.
Time Base
1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
Work schedule is Thursday to Monday.
Duration of Appointment
This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
