SALARY:
$123,000 - $156,400+ per year, the posted salary range represents the minimum to the midpoint within RVU’s compensation plan. RVU’s full compensation structure provides a minimum to a maximum range. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to skill, knowledge, experience, education, and credentials.

Primary Purpose
The Assistant General Counsel involves acting independently and in collaboration with the Office of General Counsel, managing day-to-day legal needs, including contract negotiations, drafting and interpretation, and ensuring regulatory compliance across the university. This role will provide comprehensive legal services and guidance on litigation, employment, and labor relations, administrative proceedings, and contract matters.
Essential Job Functions
- Serves as a general legal resource, along with other members of the Office of General Counsel, to Rocky Vista University with primary focus on contract negotiation, policy development, student matters, marketing, federal and state regulatory matters, and human resources.
- Advises on and interprets regulations in applicable states and US higher education.
- Engages in training of University personnel on legal, regulatory, compliance and human resources matters.
- Advises the Student Affairs department of the University and assists in the student disciplinary process when needed.
- Engages in internal investigations at the University, including in matters of academic integrity and sexual harassment in cooperation with other University personnel.
- Attends specified academic and administrative meetings.
- Supports Enrollment Management’s International Student Recruitment Strategies by providing specialized guidance to meet the needs of the international student population, facilitating referrals and coordination with the enrollment office on immigration-related matters.
- Responds directly to requests from University business personnel.
- Supervises and coordinates the activities of outside legal counsel within areas of responsibility in consultation with the Office of General Counsel.
- Keeps current on wide range of education legal and regulatory issues to assist in identifying legal issues requiring attention and to provide support.
- Assists in implementing key department processes and evaluating new approaches and technologies to meeting departmental and University needs.
- Reviews invoices from outside counsel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Track record of leadership on Inclusive Excellence initiatives to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for faculty, staff and students.
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
- Must possess good practical judgment and legal skills sufficient to render independent legal advice.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications
- J.D. Degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensed Attorney - Active license to practice law in Colorado.
- Three (3) - five (5) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
- Experience with general regulations and with general corporate matters.
- Experience in employment law and employee relations/investigation issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- Contract drafting and editing experience.
- Expertise in legal matters applicable to higher education institutions.
- Experience in legal matters applicable to medical education institutions.
