The Director, GUMC Direct Response Marketing is responsible for the development and deployment of a comprehensive direct response fundraising and awareness program for Georgetown University Medical Center. S/he develops an annual strategic plan for all direct response fundraising marketing for GUMC units through a multi-channel approach that includes direct mail, phone, digital marketing, and peer-to-peer solicitations. The incumbent supports key fundraising efforts through engagement, events, and related programs, working in close coordination with GUMC leadership and Advancement colleagues to establish annual fundraising priorities and goals. Working closely with Marketing Operations colleagues to determine the appropriate annual marketing strategies for GUMC and implement in a timely and effective manner, additional duties include, but are not limited to:
Business Planning and Direct Response Fundraising Execution
- Develop and deploy a comprehensive direct response fundraising plan for all GUMC affiliated units with a focus on donor retention, acquisition, and growth, as well as dollars under $25K.
- Continue to develop more robust direct response fundraising programs for the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and GUMC Research (Biomedical Graduate Research) incorporating patient, physician, and donor impact stories and new audiences to raise awareness and support for those units.
- Lead special fundraising initiatives for the School of Medicine: Medical Reunion Weekend fundraising, White Coat sponsorship campaign, and the School of Medicine 4th Year Class Giving campaign.
- Oversee the inclusion of key philanthropic messaging for GUMC and its units in all direct response fundraising efforts, partnering with GUMC Development colleagues, leadership, faculty, staff, and students to include impact storytelling throughout fundraising efforts.
- Continue to utilize data-driven strategies to increase fundraising and evaluate the health of the donor pipeline, and to develop a data driven leadership giving strategy to increase $1K + donors to GUMC units.
- Execute and/or partner on special fundraising initiatives when appropriate, serving as the lead Annual Giving representative for strategic and new fundraising priorities.
- Manage the budget of approximately $600,000+ for direct response fundraising efforts for GUMC, managing any relationships and financial needs of special vendors used for GUMC direct response fundraising efforts.
Staff Management
- Recruit, train and manage at minimum one full time employee.
- Educate, manage, motivate, develop, and continuously coach direct reports to create a high performing and reliable team.
- Ensure the professional development of staff by setting clear and manageable goals and performance standards.
- Support the professional development activities and training of direct report to encourage continuous learning and professional growth.
- Provide accurate and timely feedback and coaching to direct reports, including the completion of all components of the formal annual performance review process.
Goal Setting, Metrics, and Reporting
- Partner with the Annual Giving Data Analytics and Strategy, as well as leadership and key colleagues to set direct response fundraising and donor goals, as well as metrics to track and report the health of direct response fundraising tactics and strategies.
- Identify and communicate appropriate goals and reporting to key partners, including GUMC and Advancement leadership.
- Ensure accurate giving data entry, tracking and reporting in GU360.
Partnerships and Collaboration
- Partner with GUMC leadership and Development colleagues to identify and incorporate key fundraising messaging, giving priorities, patient and research stories to drive fundraising results and awareness.
- Continue to broaden collaborative direct response fundraising efforts with university partners, including: Annual Giving colleagues, GUMC Development, GUMC leadership, faculty and staff, and key Advancement colleagues like Gift Administration, Stewardship, and Communications, contributing to direct response fundraising efforts.
- Assist Advancement partners and teams as needed, participating as a volunteer in Office of Advancement and Medical Center sponsored events.
Work Interactions
The Director will report to the Assistant Vice President, Annual Giving, and manage at least one full-time staff person and operating budgets for direct response marketing efforts. Additionally, the Director will continue to build cordial and effective working relationships with appropriate GUMC leadership and development colleagues, vendors, volunteers, and a broad range of other university departments.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- 7+ years of professional experience in fundraising, direct response marketing, communications or commensurate skills and experience
- Desire to contribute to and participate in the mission of Georgetown University and its Medical Center
- First-hand experience engaging constituents through strategic, direct response fundraising and communications
- Experience and comfort working with complex metrics and analysis
- A track record of high achievement and meeting or exceeding goals with a proven ability to think strategically and develop strategic plans
- Professional and collegial demeanor and ability to exercise diplomacy
- Experience working with donors and/or volunteer leaders with the ability to think creatively and innovatively
- Ability to lead by example and through instruction with excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Strong technical/computer skills, including Microsoft applications (particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access)
- Highly organized with a strong attention to detail

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$66,783.00 - $126,720.23
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
