About the Role:
The Lead Counsel - Franchising manages all aspects of litigation/arbitration, transactional and other franchising matters within the assigned region in North America. Legal Advisor to stakeholders of Subway business teams for all franchising matters within the region. Provides stakeholders solution-focused counsel, risk assessment and strategy in a communicative and coordinated manner. Supervises Franchising Paralegal and oversees legal operations within the region.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manages all aspects of litigation, arbitration, arbitration award enforcement & settlements for all franchising matters in the region, including matters related to franchisee FA compliance, franchisee bankruptcy, franchisee evictions, franchisee initiated litigation, governmental investigations, ADA, employment, vendor litigation, and more. Engages and oversees outside counsel as needed.
- Manages legal support for all transactional matters within the region related to Business Developers, multi-unit owners, large non-traditional entity franchisees, franchisee test programs, amendments to existing FAs, etc. Drafts and negotiates associated contracts and transactions, obtaining review and advice from outside counsel as needed.
- Legal advisor to stakeholders of Subway business teams providing risk assessment and counsel on threatened/pending litigation, transactional matters, and special projects. Provides solutions and strategies in alignment with business objectives, ensuring stakeholders are well-informed.
- Supervision of Paralegal assisting with legal support of all franchising matters.
- Oversees operational aspects of all matters within the region, including the use of counsel, reviewing and approving invoices, ensuring proper tracking, and collaborating with other NA Leads for team alignment.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate required.
- At least 5 years overall experience required with 1 year's management experience.
- Admitted to practice law in the State of CT or the ability to waive in.
- Strong advocacy and negotiation skills with a focus on litigation and arbitration (required) and transactional matters (highly preferred).
- Effective analytical and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently managing a large case load across various practice areas.
- Ability to provide sound legal advice to stakeholders promptly that balances legal and business objectives.
- Experience in Franchise Law and/or Real Estate a plus.

Actual pay is determined based on various job-related factors including skills, education, training, credentials, qualifications, scope and complexity of role responsibilities, geographic location, performance, and working conditions.
