Purpose:
The Director of Back Office & Middle Office, Sr. Dr. will oversee and drive the performance and strategic enhancement of back-office and middle-office functions, focusing on the accounting of lifecycle events for financial instruments including derivatives, advances, letters of credit, consolidated obligations, investments, and deposits. The role is pivotal in ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of transaction settlements, and reporting with an emphasis on process improvements.
The ideal candidate is an expert in operational efficiency, with a strong track record of implementing automation and process enhancements. Major Accountabilities:
Primary responsibility is the daily performance of the Bank's financial instruments servicing functions including but not limited to:
- Operations Leadership: Lead the daily operations and own the accounting of lifecycle events for financial instruments such as derivatives, investments, deposits, and other assets and liabilities. Ensure timely and accurate settlement, accounting, and reporting of these financial instruments, while continuously seeking to improve workflows and set a high standard for operational excellence.
- Hands-On Contribution: Actively participate in operational tasks and support the team where necessary, demonstrating an ability to step in and resolve complex issues. Lead by example, always willing to contribute at an individual level when required to achieve team success.
- Process Optimization & Automation: Drive initiatives to identify and implement process improvements and automation across operations. Leverage advanced proficiency in Excel and SQL to develop automation tools, including creating and modifying VBA macros and SQL scripts on the fly to streamline workflows and increase efficiency.
- Financial Reporting & Control: Oversee financial and operational reporting, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal controls (e.g., SOX). Collaborate with internal teams and auditors to maintain strong governance and ensure reconciliations and reports are accurate and timely.
- Client and Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal teams (e.g., technology, finance) and external clients. Ensure a customer-centric approach to service delivery, while proactively addressing operational challenges and providing solutions that add value.
- Team Leadership & Development: Build strong relationships with direct reports, actively supporting their professional development and job satisfaction. Foster a culture where employees are empowered, engaged, and motivated to perform at their best, while consistently achieving high standards of performance.
- Project Management: Lead key system upgrades, product introductions, and other operational projects from initiation through delivery. Ensure alignment with business requirements, deadlines, and quality standards, coordinating across teams to achieve exceptional project outcomes.
- Risk Management: Proactively identify operational risks and collaborate with teams to design and implement effective solutions. Continuously review and improve internal controls to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
Skills/Knowledge:
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related field (CPA, MBA, or other advanced certifications preferred).
- 10+ years of operations experience in financial services, with a focus on financial instrument lifecycle servicing and a strong technical acumen.
- Proven ability to identify and implement process improvements and automation strategies, enhancing operational efficiency and achieving measurable results.
- At least 5 years of leadership experience, with a focus on fostering employee engagement, well-being, and development.
- Hands-on mentality, with a willingness to step in and perform individual contributor work when needed, demonstrating flexibility and a strong commitment to team success.
- Expertise in financial reporting, trade settlements, operational controls (e.g., SOX), and industry best practices.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and SQL, with the ability to develop automation solutions using VBA and SQL on the fly to streamline processes and improve accuracy.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across departments and communicate complex ideas to all levels of the organization.
- Experience leading system conversions, upgrades, or major technology implementations, ensuring that business needs are met and operational standards are maintained.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and operational disciplines under pressure, making sound decisions and knowing when to escalate issues for resolution.

SALARY RANGE: 175K - $195K
