The Washington State Department of Natural Resources is looking for a Communications Manager to join our Communications Department.
This position provides strategic guidance to the agency, in coordination with the Communications & Outreach Division, with regard to developing, designing, writing, and implementing communications plans, and producing materials such as news releases, presentations, brochures, social media content, blogs, website content and editing other materials. This position also prepares the Commissioner of Public Lands for media interviews on the areas of focus and supports other communications managers in message crafting and editing as needed. This position also advises the deputy and communications directors in crisis communications situations, providing strategic advice and guidance for the agency in critical situations (i.e.: wildfire, natural disaster, etc.) and assists with the agency’s media relations training as needed and requested.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic media and public relations
- Advises the Commissioner, Chief of Staff, and other members of agency Executive Leadership on strategic media strategies and outreach, including providing recommendations on public relations decisions and strategies.
- On the record spokesperson for DNR and for the Commissioner of Public Lands on state lands issues, including representing and speaking on behalf of the agency and the Commissioner to the press and to members of the public.
- Responsible for tracking, developing, researching, planning, leading, and supporting DNR media stories and events including: writing news releases; identifying positive media opportunities, pitching stories to the media, keeping leadership informed, overseeing media interactions, and responding to media inquiries.
- Directs and assists other communications managers in developing materials and messaging to support the agency’s legislative priorities and strategies.
- Consults with and advises division leaders on strategic communications plans, public issues, and communications strategies with recommended objectives and tactics.
- Writes, edits, and designs factsheets, web pages, social media content, and brochures by translating policy documents, legislative bills, and state regulations into easily understood materials. The position consults with subject matter experts to make certain that materials accurately reflect agency initiatives.
- Creates visually compelling graphics and materials.
- Works with stakeholder groups and partner agencies to develop collaborative communications efforts, and joint events, and to review materials pertaining to DNR.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in communications of visual media or closely related field AND at least four years of experience in a media relations role, OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Experience drafting press communications materials including press releases and media advisories.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
- Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.
