The incumbent is responsible for managing the provision of school health nursing services in the District of Columbia Public and Public Charter Schools. He or she holds overall responsibility for developing an overall programmatic vision and moving the program to new levels of achievement. He or she is responsible for setting operational priorities for nursing, planning and executing strategies to meet and/or exceed operational and financial targets.
As part of a public-private partnership with the District of Columbia's Department of Health (DOH), Children's School Services (through Children's National Hospital oversight) provides on-site nursing services in 120+ DC public schools and 70+ public charter schools.
The population of the District of Columbia is approximately 600,000 residents, approximately 20% of whom are children.

The school nursing team provides comprehensive school health nursing services to school-age children in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention, while also safeguarding patient integrity and autonomy.
Our fleet of RNs, LPNs, and Student Health Techs are responsible for:
- Immunizations
- Ongoing expansion of clinical knowledge base
- Rotating between assigned schools as needed/required
- Organizing and/or carrying out clinical activities for the day including vision and hearing screening, clinical assessment of health conditions, and referrals
- Appraising and addressing the needs of the general student population, students with chronic and acute health problems and special education students with unique needs
- Performing a variety of selective individual health assessment and initiate the referrals on identified health needs and perform subsequent follow-up

Qualifications
Minimum Education: Master's of Science in Nursing (Required)
Minimum Experience: 7 years in a progressively responsible nurse leadership role (Required)
Required Skills/Knowledge: Strong knowledge of professional nursing standards, local and federal laws and regulations that govern school health nursing practice, and other regulatory agency requirements. Demonstrated leadership and management skills. Demonstrated negotiation skills and the ability to manage in a unionized environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge and demonstrated skills implementing and managing budget and cost accounting practices.
Required Licenses and Certifications: Registered Nurse in District of Columbia (Required)

Coordination of School Health Nursing:
- Develop strategic direction for the provision of school health nursing care and nursing services in collaboration with the CSS Leadership and Management Team to achieve programmatic goals and objectives.
- Design a nursing care delivery model that assures each student receives high quality, cost-effective and efficient nursing care and services.
- Develop and implement strategies to promote a culture of service excellence to facilitate the provision of best practices in the delivery of school health nursing services.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to design and implement strategies to assure the coordination of care delivery to meet student health needs across the continuum of care.
Quality of Care:
- Develop and implement a plan that ensures the application of Standards of Professional nursing practice and Standards of Care to facilitate consistent high quality care and service delivery to students.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve the quality of service, quality of student care and level of student, parent and key stakeholder satisfaction with school health services.
- Develop and implement strategies for assuring compliance with standards regarding the care of students in the school setting.
Financial Planning and Management:
- Develop and efficiently manage the financial plan to support the program.
- Allocate and monitor resources to achieve quality care, productivity and compliance with contractual requirements.
Human Resource Management:
- Determine and effectively manage nursing resources to reduce turnover, vacancies and to increase the availability of competent nursing staff to provide school health nursing care and services in schools approved for coverage by CSS.
- Implement human resources concepts and principles congruent with policies and procedures consistent with established human resources concepts and principles.
- Manage unionized staff consistent with policies, procedures and consistent with the collective bargaining agreement.
- Inspire, coach, develop and lead the nursing management team to meet contractual requirements.
