The Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management for Inova Alexandria Hospital provides the safest possible environment through a proactive program stressing hazard identification, elimination or control and awareness. Acts as the hospital lead and subject matter expert for Security, Emergency Management and Environment of Care while following strategic guidance provided by the System Office of Emergency Management. Responsible for the coordination, development, and promotion of emergency operations, with a key focus on putting the safety of our team members, patients, and the public we have the privilege to serve at the center of all of our policies, procedures, and best practices. Develops and implements planning activities as well as lead effective preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery for emergency events. Responsible for leading the environment of care committee while ensuring an environment free from safety hazards.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversees assigned department or functional area to ensure it is performing effectively, which may include but not limited to, preparing and implementing business strategy to achieve the organization's goals, ensuring legal compliance, communicating and collaborating with stakeholders, managing employment decisions and contributions of supporting team members, and managing departmental budget and fiscal success.
- Provides training to staff on hospital emergency protocols; Organizes regular disaster exercises and drills to evaluate local and regional emergency response plans; Ensures that all team members are in compliance.
- Reviews emergency response plans, works collaboratively with first responders, hospital administrators, and other stakeholders to facilitate any necessary revisions or modifications to Inova Health Systems Emergency Management Plan; Maintains and updates all resource materials associated with emergency management plans; Works with the System Office of Emergency Management to design and administer emergency management training.
- Identifies necessary equipment for responding to emergencies; Determines equipment placement, inventory, maintenance, and testing; Provides instruction on equipment maintenance and use.
- Participates in local and regional emergency planning groups and exercises; Includes participation in hospital and community hazard and risk assessments; Collaborates with other emergency management personnel, local, state and federal officials in order to facilitate plan development and response effort coordination; Cooperates with federal, state, and local law enforcement, emergency management, and/or other agencies as necessary.
- Responds to emergency and disaster situations involving hazardous materials, inclement weather, patient surge, evacuation, and/or sheltering to provide assistance and coordinate resources.
- Ensures that all plans, operating procedures, and protocols are developed and implemented in compliance with the requirements of regulatory agencies (The Joint commission/ CMS); Attends meetings, seminars, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate; maintains a comprehensive current knowledge and awareness of emergency management strategies and applicable laws/regulations.
- Responsible for oversight and direction of Environment of Care and Emergency Management chapters of The Joint Commission accreditation requirements; Facilitates/coordinates the hospital Environment of Care committee and Emergency Management Committee.
- Coordinates safety and security training to support local hospital processes and procedures by productively implementing best practices in safety, security and emergency preparedness with proper adaptation to the environment.
Minimum Requirements:
- Certification - Must be able to obtain National Incident Management System 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800 within 1 year of hire date
- 5 years of related professional experience
- 2 years of management experience
- Bachelor's degree in related field (or relevant experience in lieu of degree equivalent to 4 years)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a healthcare/hospital system
- Has demonstrated experinece in Emergency Management
- Experience leading a security program and/or developing and led security exercises and training
