Job purpose
The Senior Manager, Outreach and Membership will implement the strategy and direction of the overall AFJ Membership program. Collaborating with all AFJ program, communications, and development teams, the Senior Manager, Outreach and Membership will ensure member organizations are substantively engaged in AFJ/AFJ Action programs, evaluate and identify new programs and services to offer, strengthen communications, oversee annual dues solicitation and renewals, and grow the membership in scope and size. While focusing on our member organizations, they will also contribute to the Outreach and Membership team’s priorities engaging AFJ/AFJ Action’s network of partner organizations, legal communities, and activists in our work to build power, transform courts, and secure justice for all.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead programming, communications, and operational strategies to deepen relationships with AFJ member organizations, grow membership, identify opportunities for member program to further organizational priorities, and strengthen dues/renewals processes;
- Work with Deputy Director of Outreach and Membership and VP of Strategy to set priorities for expansion of membership and member programs, leading recruitment including identifying and cultivating potential members;
- Oversee annual dues renewal process, from materials to structure of dues levels to solicitation and follow-up;
- Collaborate across AFJ/AFJ Action teams to proactively integrate members into Justice, Bolder Advocacy, Outreach, Communications, and Development programs, advocacy and events;
- Evaluate current and launch new member services, including identifying aspects of AFJ’s programs that can be tailored to provide unique benefits to members;
- Ensure member organizations are continuously engaged through strategic principal and staff outreach and ongoing communications, identifying new strategies to promote their activities across membership and to the public;
- Work closely with Database Manager, Director of Finance, and other administrative and program staff to ensure systems accurately track engagement, recruitment, and dues data;
- Participate in work to increase AFJ’s racial equity capacity internally and as embodied in AFJ’s member organization program and partnerships;
- Develop and implement targeted member engagement plans for AFJ priority nominations and policies in issue area such as court reform, working with Communications to create sample content for member organizations to disseminate via newsletters, action toolkits, sample letters to the editor, sign-on letters and press materials;
- Maintain and build contact lists, including member information in EveryAction;
- Assist with managing and planning programs for Outreach and Membership interns;
- Work across departments to assist with outreach for additional organization priorities as necessary;
- Perform other duties and assist other departments as required.
Qualifications
- 5+ years’ experience with increasing responsibilities in membership, outreach/organizing, development, and/or nonprofit programs;
- Leadership experience in membership-, affiliate- or coalition-based structures preferred;
- Demonstrated experience working with variety of stakeholder organizations and individuals to engage and motivate to action, including underrepresented constituencies and organizations;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to interact online, on the phone and in-person with stakeholders, legal community, coalition members, and professional staff;
- Experience with coalition organizing and community building;
- Experience with constituent management systems such as EveryAction, Salsa, VAN, and Convio;
- Demonstrated success planning events and/or program series;
- Highly organized and detail oriented with experience developing or sustaining engagement tracking systems;
- Experience working on issues related to social justice causes and constitutional protections;
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment;
- Demonstrated commitment to centering underrepresented and diverse constituencies, such as communities of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ communities, and more;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, “can do” attitude and a desire to work in a collegial and diverse environment.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a non-exempt union position covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, CWA Local 32035, which includes salary minimums based on job position category. The Senior Manager, Outreach and Membership position is in Group 5 and has a salary minimum of $85,000. The salary range is $85,000-$93,000.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so. On occasions, travel by train and airplane. Work Environment
This is a full-time position that is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (combination of in-person and remote work). General office working conditions, the noise level in the office is usually quiet. Some occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
Direct Reports
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but will assist in the management of interns.
