The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
The Department of Neurology at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) is seeking a full-time faculty neurologist to serve as the Chief of the Division of Epilepsy. The Chief will be responsible for advancing the Division’s clinical, educational, and research missions with goals of optimizing patient access and faculty productivity; improving the patient experience; increasing extramural research funding; and supporting the education of medical students, residents, and fellows. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The Chief will foster and recruit faculty and trainees, strengthen collaborative departmental and hospital partner relationships, enhance outreach activities, and engage local and regional community physicians. They will also develop local clinical protocols, clinical pathways, and outcomes measures to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of care. The Chief will be expected to lead the Division to the next level in clinical care, research, and training. This individual will supervise a vibrant team of academic neurologists who are providing innovative and individualized inpatient and outpatient clinical care, educating the next generation of neurologists, and conducting cutting-edge research within a collegial atmosphere.
The Division of Epilepsy consists of seven faculty members. Faculty see patients at the Medical Arts and Research Center (MARC) and University Health System Neurology Clinic, and cover the inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) and in- and outpatient electroencephalography (EEG) services. The program offers one-year fellowships in Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology. Each fellowship year focuses on clinical and procedural skills and offers the opportunity to participate in clinical research and anti-seizure medication trials.
The flagship of the epilepsy program is the South Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (STCEC). The STCEC is a multidisciplinary affiliation of adult and pediatric epileptologists, epilepsy surgeons, dieticians, and neuropsychologists, working in conjunction with University Health outpatient and inpatient nursing and, most importantly, with the technical staff at the Neurodiagnostic Center (NDC). The STCEC joined the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) in 2008 with the highest Level 4 accreditation.
Minimum requirements are:
- Completion of ACGME-accredited neurology residency training
- Completion of fellowship training in epilepsy or clinical neurophysiology
