Role Description
The Electrode Engineering team within the Technology group at Form is multidisciplinary and focused on delivering qualified battery anode and cathode designs that meet operational performance targets, at cost and with high reliability, from controlled processes on high-volume manufacturing lines for Form Energy's utility-scale multi-day energy storage system.
We're seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team and play a crucial role in designing components for our battery cell design! You'll own the design of components and assemblies from concept to production, with a strong emphasis on design for manufacturing and assembly. As a problem solver, you'll creatively tackle mechanical design challenges and apply your knowledge of designing plastic and metal components for mass manufacturing. You'll work cross-functionally with teams on requirements definition and verification plans to deliver a design that meets those requirements. Comfortable working in a prototype shop environment, you'll communicate with manufacturers to deliver an optimized, production-ready design. Troubleshooting design problems as they arise and working with the Electrode & Cell Engineering design teams to implement improvements will also be a part of your responsibilities. If this sounds like the perfect opportunity for you, apply now!
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of scaling our multi-day energy storage system at Form and contributing to a sustainable future.
What you'll do:
- Lead the design of components integral to the battery cell electrodes and electrode stack assembly.
- Develop functional requirements in close collaboration with members of the Cell Engineering, Electrode Engineering, and Systems Engineering teams.
- Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with broader teams to build integrated prototypes.
- Release designs consistent with company and team best practices (drawings, tolerance analysis, etc).
- Demonstrate design functionality through analysis (e.g. FEA, CFD) and component- or system-level testing.
- Work with vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from the prototype stage to high volume production.
- Drive verification testing of your design work.
What you'll bring:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 4+ years, or Master's with industry experience in mechanical design.
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), specifically SolidWorks modeling and drafting.
- Proficient in component design for mass manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), especially metal and injection molded plastic components.
- Proficient with prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop environment.
- Familiarity with mechanical verification testing.
- Experience with the design and verification of air or liquid seals is a plus.
- Experience working with batteries, energy storage, fuel cells, or electrolyzers is a plus.
