General Overview
The Senior Organization Development Consultant will lead and support a broad spectrum of projects, programs and interventions across Mass General Brigham. Working with HR leaders and with colleagues in the People and Organization Development function areas (Learning, Leadership Development, Mobility and Succession, and Project Management), the Consultant will be a vital resource in gathering divergent information to develop scalable OD interventions that optimize team and leader performance toward goal achievement.
Reporting to the Director of Organization Development, the Senior Consultant will lead projects in collaboration with team members offering contemporary solutions. The ideal candidate will have corporate experience working in large, diverse, complex, matrixed organizations.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Consultation skills: Serves as an internal consultant by leading internal clients by exploring presenting problems and collaboratively deciding on a course of action based on solid empirical data and best practices in the OD field. Understands and assesses issues by utilizing a systemic thinking approach. Assist leaders in understanding how strategies, structures, systems, and people interactions impact the entire system and affect business outcomes. 25%
- Interventionist: Is knowledgeable of and applies structured change management strategies and methodologies to ensure successful and sustainable organizational behavior change. Has a solid knowledge of what tools can be effective during specific phases of the change process and knows how to utilize these tools to achieve the most significant gain in organizational capability. 20%
- Facilitating change: Improves organization effectiveness using solid knowledge in organizational design principles. Understands how to utilize an operating model methodology to define an effective organizational structure inclusive of core work, core competencies, key positions, roles and responsibilities, tools, operational norms and structure. Serves as a consultant to diagnose functional and dysfunctional aspects of the structural system and engages in collaborative problem solving and action planning to increase effectiveness. 15%
- Practitioner skills: Understands the process of interactive group dynamics and holds a solid understanding of group interaction and dynamics, understanding how groups develop and how members relate to each other. Utilizes team effectiveness theory and best practices to assess, plan, design, implement, & evaluate team development activities based upon identified individual, group, and organizational needs. 20%
- Partnering for success: Establish and maintain strategic business partnerships with the Human Resources department and business units across the MGB enterprise; interface with leaders at all levels. 10%
- Continuous learning: Research trends and innovations and remain current with all developments, new techniques and new technologies in organizational development and organizational behavior. 10%
Problem Solving: The problems regularly encountered in this role might fall into any one of these areas: strategies, structures, systems, and people. Often more than one factor is encountered or misaligned, and in complex instances, all of them require attention. This position requires the ability to assess which factor(s) need intervention and identify and design the approach to help a team, department, service line, or organization achieve greater effectiveness and competitiveness.
Impact: The work of organization development and design can significantly influence the organization, primarily through its impact on staff and leadership due to the nature of the work. The Consultant uses OD processes to facilitate change, contract, diagnose, collect data, provide feedback, create design interventions, implement and evaluate the impact on staff and leaders depending on the size and nature of the intervention. Accessing department structures, the Sr. Consultant will use organizational design to align structures, roles, and processes to strategic objectives and involve changes in how organizational leaders think about and act upon the work.
Interactions / Interpersonal Skills: The OD consultant requires strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cross-functional teams, including staff at all levels of the organization, the ability to develop rapport with others and recognize their concerns and feelings; build and maintain long-term associations based on trust; create a network of contacts and target specific influential people to reach goals; work closely with other departments as necessary.
Qualifications
Education Minimum: University / Post Graduate (Masters Degree) and/or 7+ years of role-related experience.
Experience Minimum: 7+ years of Organization Development experience required.
Preferred: Healthcare preferred or extensive experience working in a large, matrixed organization.
