THE SEARCH
The Thomas E. Smith Foundation (TESF) seeks an experienced, dynamic, strategic, and entrepreneurial leader to serve as the organization’s inaugural executive director and chief operating officer. The TESF is an Andover, Massachusetts, based non-profit organization with a focus on bettering the lives of those affected by and living with paralysis through financial and emotional support, as well as supporting research and preventive innovations that decrease the risk of spinal cord injuries.
Run solely on volunteer efforts to date, the mission-oriented 501(c)(3) nonprofit is a speedily growing leader in the paralysis community. Despite its lean structure, this gritty and determined organization has accomplished a steady growth trajectory throughout the course of its 13-year history, earning acclaim from national press and cultivating partnerships with organizations such as the National Hockey League. Now, with generous support from philanthropic individuals and a recent multi-million-dollar gift from a private donor, the organization has a broad vision—coupled with the resources to make this vision a reality—to expand its reach, deepen its impact, and become a consistent seven-figure organization in the next three years.
This represents a significant opportunity for the executive director and COO to drive growth and shape new initiatives at the foundation to further its mission and help meet the tremendous need and urgency to provide direct support to those living with spinal cord injuries, and to continue advancing research and rehabilitation programs that lead to better outcomes and, one day, a cure.
This leader will be committed to building a sustainable standard operating procedure, ensuring operational excellence in an organization undergoing rapid growth in scale and impact. Working in close partnership with a deeply dedicated board of trustees, the executive director and COO role calls for an individual who is a mission-driven and passionate leader who will bring exceptional operational and financial acumen to the position. They will serve not only as an organizational leader, but a strategist, fundraiser, and marketer, ensuring the advancement of the TESF’s ambitious goals.
The successful candidate will expand revenue streams, deepen and diversify partnerships and collaborations, enhance the TESF’s brand awareness, and strengthen its organizational governance and effectiveness. This opportunity calls for an entrepreneur who thrives on building and growing a promising organization. The incumbent will bring both the confidence to succeed paired with a low ego—the focus always centering on the work and those being served by the organization—and the flexibility and adaptability to work within an organization that is swiftly evolving and highly entrepreneurial.
