The Assistant Director, Financial Assistance for the School of Law, assists with the administration of federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs for incoming and current law students at the University of Miami School of Law. This position reviews student files, correspondence, and scholarship and financial awards in accordance with University, state, and federal regulations. Moreover, this position is responsible for the efficient, effective, and timely delivery of financial assistance to law students.
This position has a dual reporting relationship to the Department of Graduate & Professional Financial Aid in the University’s Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment and the Associate Dean for Admissions and Enrollment Management at the School of Law.
Department-Specific Responsibilities:
- Serves and supports all law students (J.D., LL.M., S.J.D., and any other students enrolled in a law school program), regarding their financial aid matters, supporting the services provided by the Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment and other related University offices or departments such as CanesCentral.
- Reviews and analyzes financial aid application data to determine eligibility for accurate and compliant financial aid award packages.
- Contacts law students regarding changes in eligibility of awards and alternatives through the Salesforce system in Canes Central.
- Assists in modifying financial aid packages based on changes in enrollment level, budget adjustments, and changes in aid.
- Troubleshoots individual law student aid problems and supports law student escalations through CanesCentral.
- Reviews law student files and correspondence, awards financial aid, and makes decisions using professional judgment regarding special circumstances such as cost of attendance adjustments.
- Assists in the administration and updating of endowed and gift scholarships which involves coordination with the law school’s budget and development and alumni offices. Expedites the correction of scholarship awards to avoid incorrect transactions on a student account record. Coordinates the handling of these exceptions with the student accounts office when necessary.
- Ensures that the administration of all programs is in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
- Safeguards that all required returns and/or post-withdrawal disbursements are processed in compliance with federal and state timeframes.
- Provides assistance to manage and process outside and private scholarships and grants.
- Participates in financial aid outreach efforts including the counseling of Law students regarding student debt matters.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant Financial Aid experience required. Experience with PowerFAIDS preferred. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
- Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
- Proficiency in computer software, financial aid management systems, data analysis and Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent customer service skills.
