Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio is currently seeking a Chief Operating Officer based out of our home office in Columbus, Ohio.

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for ensuring that LSS's operational infrastructure supports its mission to deliver ethical, high-quality, and impactful health and human services. The COO plays a pivotal role in driving scalable growth, fostering a data-driven culture, and enhancing organizational performance. Reporting to the President & CEO, the COO will lead the Vice President of Human Resources, Vice President of IT, Director of Quality Assurance, and Director of Corporate Nursing to achieve strategic goals, optimize processes, and nurture a culture of continuous improvement and staff development.
What will I do as a Chief Operating Officer with Lutheran Social Services:
Systems Integration and Process Improvement
- Lead organization-wide efforts to integrate and optimize systems that enhance day-to-day operations and align with long-term strategic priorities.
- Leverage operational framework principles, like EOS or Six Sigma, to foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and cross-functional alignment and ensure that resources are deployed efficiently across departments.
- Actively manage change by developing and executing communication strategies, training plans, and performance metrics to ensure successful adoption of new processes and systems.
Quality Assurance, Human Resources, and IT Leadership
- Develop, implement, and continuously update policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and funder requirements and industry best practices.
- Oversee regular audits, accreditation processes, and risk management initiatives to maintain a high service delivery and operational integrity standard.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development to direct reports, building a pipeline of future leaders within the organization.
- Cultivate a data-driven environment by identifying, selecting, and deploying technology solutions that drive efficiency and enhance programmatic impact, ensuring that KPIs are tracked and analyzed for continuous improvement.
Strategic Leadership and Culture Development
- Shape and sustain a high-performing organizational culture that reflects LSS's core values, promotes staff engagement, and drives exceptional service delivery.
- Spearhead mergers and acquisitions by conducting thorough due diligence, preparing comprehensive financial and operational analyses, and overseeing the seamless integration of new entities into LSS's operations.
- Lead efforts to attract, develop, and retain top talent across the organization, fostering an inclusive and growth-oriented environment.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive risk management strategy that safeguards the organization's assets, reputation, and sustainability.
- Oversee compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and legal requirements, ensuring that LSS is well-positioned to meet and exceed industry standards.
- Regularly review and enhance risk mitigation processes, proactively addressing areas of vulnerability to minimize potential disruptions to service delivery and operations.
Requirements for a Chief Operating Officer with Lutheran Social Services:
- A bachelor's degree in social work administration, healthcare administration, business, or a related field is required; an MSW, MHCA, MBA, or equivalent advanced degree is preferred.
- A minimum of five years of executive-level management experience in healthcare or human services nonprofits, with a proven track record of driving organizational growth, operational efficiency, and programmatic success.
- Demonstrated success in implementing strategic initiatives and leading organizational change.
- Project Management, Process Improvement, Change Management and Business Operations Mergers, Acquisitions, and Integrations Experience.
- A Valid Ohio driver's license, access to reliable insured transportation and ability to meet LSS insurance standards.
