Literary Arts is looking for an Assistant Bookstore Manager to join the team at our new bookstore located in our multifunction literary center. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to establish and define the store’s direction alongside the Bookstore Manager and Literary Arts senior leadership.
The Position:
The Assistant Bookstore Manager will be the first hire for the bookstore after our Bookstore Manager. They will be involved in curating an exciting and mission-aligned selection of books, training the bookstore team, working with the café team to create a warm and welcoming customer experience, and collaborating with the programming staff to support and grow the thriving readers, writers, and youth community that Literary Arts serves.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Daily Store Operations:
- Point of Sale system reporting and ordering
- Staffing schedules
- Merchandising organization, planning and implementation
- Manage day-to-day business operations, including cash handling
- With Bookstore Manager and Literary Arts programming staff, schedule, coordinate and host bookstore events as needed
- Oversee the maintenance of operational systems including POS and bookstore portion of website
- Serve as a role model in creating a welcoming space for both customers and community gatherings
- Adapt, implement and lead staff in customer service best practices
- Attend trade shows and represent the bookstore in professional gatherings
- Inventory & Merchandising Control:
- Receive and return merchandise as needed
- Oversee prompt merchandising and rotation of display spaces
- Manage inventory count and shrink, order store supplies
Experience & Requirements:
- At least three years of experience as a bookseller
- Experience with training retail staff
- Available to work nights, weekends, and some holidays as required
- Ability to interact with people with diverse backgrounds
- Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for building relationships with customers, vendors, and team members
- Strong public speaking skills with the ability to handle and coordinate event hosting
- Compassionate and respectful management/conflict resolution skills
- Experience with “Bookmanager” Point of Sale (POS) system or another bookstore-specific computer management system a plus
