We are looking for a Division CIO to lead IT for US Specialty, which includes software engineering and application operations spanning digital, underwriting, claims, data and architecture.
You will be responsible for aligning IT with business goals, managing IT budgets and staffing, overseeing IT projects and services, and ensuring IT security, compliance, and operational resiliency.
This role will be a member of the Markel Insurance Leadership Team reporting to the Chief Information Officer of Global Insurance Operations.
Job Summary
The Chief Information Officer for US Specialty leads a team accountable for all technology supporting Markel’s Specialty division. The ideal candidate is a forward-looking, visionary technology leader, with an innovative engineering and customer focus mind-set. This role plays a pivotal role in ensuring IT is an effective partner in delivering relevant technology and exceptional experiences to underwriting, claims and operations. You will have management responsibilities for technology teams who operate in an agile manner and interact with product team members and product line leaders. The leader will be a member of the Specialty Senior Leadership Team partnering closely with the US Specialty Chief Operations Officer and US Specialty Chief Claims Officer.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the IT vision and roadmap for the division, in alignment with the global divisional business objectives and technology strategy.
- Responsible for development of future state architecture strategy and multi-year roadmap plan that is fully aligned and integrated with US Specialty business and operational plans in partnership with US Specialty Chief Operations Officer.
- Manage the IT budget and resources for the division, ensuring optimal allocation and utilization of IT assets and capabilities in partnership with US Specialty Chief Financial Officer.
- Oversee the agile delivery teams, performance of project investments and operational services for the division, ensuring quality, timeliness, and customer satisfaction.
- Partner with US Specialty stakeholders to anticipate key marketplace trends, drive continuous improvement, drive business results and create value added market offerings.
- Provides technical advice, guidance, direction, and authorization to carry out major technology plans and processes.
- Ensure IT security and compliance for the division, partnering with GSS and following the corporate IT policies and standards, and addressing any division-specific risks and regulations.
- Skilled at inspiring, motivating and developing staff, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Provides leadership and direction to Managing Directors and Sr. Directors.
- Communicate and collaborate with senior management, stakeholders and critical vendors/partners.
- Represent IT organization in executive meetings and senior level steering committees - technology plans and capabilities, deliver execution and performance of IT to all senior stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with the divisional and corporate stakeholders, acting as a trusted advisor and partner for IT-related matters.
Education
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field required.
Work Experience/Skill Set
- Minimum of 15+ years in a senior management position and IT management experience in insurance, preferably in Property and Casualty.
- A forward-thinking, impactful technology executive with a customer experience mind-set and innovative engineering focus.
- Proven track record of developing and executing technology strategies and projects.
- First-hand experience with implementation of Guidewire PolicyCenter, ClaimCenter and/or BillingCenter.
- Strong knowledge and experience in IT governance, service management, data, cloud, SecOps, and compliance.
- Experienced in analyzing critical infrastructure and application risks and recommending contingency plans.
- Strong experience of IT Financial Management and cost optimization.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to engage senior level management through clear, complete, informed and logical discussions.
- Ability to adapt and lead IT functions as well as change through matrixed operating model.
- Strong leadership skills with demonstrated experience of managing and developing a team.
- Willingness to travel up to 15% of the time for business purposes.
This role is expected to be located in one of the following Markel offices: Alpharetta (GA), Chicago (IL), New York City (NY), Plano (TX), Red Bank (NJ), Richmond (VA), Scottsdale (AZ), and Summit (NJ).

Pay information:
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The salary for the position is $250K - $305K with a 65% bonus potential and a 35% Long-Term Equity Incentive.
