Program Director Position Description
Location: Portland, Oregon
Job title: Program Director
Pay / Hours: Salary of $45,000 per year, 40 hrs/week, Mon-Fri, occasional weekends, exempt. Required to close the building at 8pm at least once a week. Medical insurance, PTO, and free music lessons offered.
Summary of Position: This position directs the function and development of the Music Lessons for Kids (ML4K) and Music Corps (MC) programs. The Program Director will work from Ethos headquarters to supervise admissions, determine class offerings, develop a talented and diverse roster of music instructors, collaboratively support programmatic growth, meet budget goals, consistently use inclusive and equitable practices, and develop partnerships, among other responsibilities.
This position must coordinate with, and be reasonably available to other employees, students, families, partners, vendors, and other organizational stakeholders. As such, this position also requires clear, respectful, and effective written and verbal communication.

Essential Responsibilities
- Manage and implement Music Corps
- Recruit schools and collaborate with SUN site managers at Portland Public Schools.
- Recruit and place teachers in partner sites.
- Collect and report data on associated grants
- Collaborate with Admissions Staff for the implementation of Music Lessons for Kids
- Attend Admissions Meetings
- Develop responsive programming in collaboration with the community.
- Supervise, plan, and coordinate summer camps, recitals, musical showcases and other events.
- Determine class offerings, content terms, catalog and more, allowing for programmatic growth.
- Manage schedules based on current and new program offerings.
- Collaboratively hire and supervise music instructors on a rolling basis for ML4K, MC, and Summer Camps.
- Ensure the timely processing of background checks and onboarding.
- Supervise and coach approximately 30 instructors and select staff, including check-ins, observations, and evaluations.
- Process departmental payroll
- Help oversee building maintenance and note/followup on building needs in conjunction with directors.
- Support other programs and directors (adhering to grant agreements) by delivering instruments/equipment, providing substitution for music instruction, collaboratively facilitating training and planning, and other reasonable needs as they arise.
- Accurately record and track budgetary spending and ensure fulfillment of grant requirements.
- Possess high level of musicianship and musical IQ.
- Consistently build positive relationships with all stakeholders.
- Complete other projects and tasks needed, in collaboration with other directors.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two or more years experience in nonprofit program management
- Full competency in the Microsoft Office Suite / Google Suite.
- A proactive work-ethic, positive attitude and investment in the transformative qualities of music education.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills with a careful attention to detail.
- Deep understanding of inclusivity, equity and diversity as a foundation of sustainability and growth.
- Fluency in Spanish is not required, but preferred.
