Senior Director, Cancer Care Services

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Director, Cancer Care Services provides leadership for clinical, administrative, operational, business development, and physician relationship activities in support of assigned service lines, business partnerships, and ancillary services. The Senior Director works within Cancer Care Services to assure the effective integration of strategy and operations achieving the defined key performance indicators. The Director works closely with physicians, managers and other service providers to translate the hospital's mission and goals into specific practice goals and objectives and to enhance service delivery to patients in the continuum of care. The Senior Director will lead program development, growth, and expansion within the Cancer Service Line to benefit our patients and the organization. The Senior Director will work with other services such as pharmacy, labs, and ancillary groups across inpatient and outpatient settings. The Senior Director will possess extensive operational leadership experience within complex and matrixed healthcare environments, a proven track record in improving the patient experience, strategic leadership background with diverse workforces, experience and success as an executive change agent, and accomplishments in developing and implementing a vision for strategic service line operations.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Strategic Planning and Leadership
- Collaborates in the development of the vision, philosophy, goals, objectives and programs of the Cancer Care Service Line including inpatient and outpatient care, new program growth and expansion, clinical trials, and many wraparound services which benefit our patients.
- Develops and implements an administrative structure which is designed to support effective efficient patient care and operations.
- Leads and supports collaborative practice and multi-disciplinary coordination across the Cancer Service Line. Develops structures and programs to improve interdepartmental coordination.
- Oversees the Operations Director who is responsible for the day-to-day management of all Cancer Care Services including clinic operations, the infusion center, and our multi-disciplinary clinic. Partners with and supports the Operations Director to build and mentor a highly-functioning team to manage operations.
Quality of Care
- Collaborates with clinical leadership in the development of standards for professional practice, patient care, and innovative programs designed to facilitate high quality patient care and operations.
- Fosters the development of a work environment conducive to the delivery of superior patient care and appropriate staff retention/recruitment.
- Provides leadership for and participates in the development of continuous multidisciplinary quality improvement for assigned areas, in collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary team.
Outreach and Marketing
- Develops professional relationships with the community organizations and physician practices through effective networking.
- Evaluates and monitors affiliated community health center access to cancer services and develops and implements policies and practices to promote accessibility and responsiveness to inquiries and referrals.
- Provides outreach and community and professional education regarding the Cancer Care Services programs, including public relations and marketing at community events and professional conferences, creation of marketing letters, and facilitating on-site visits.
- Represents Boston Medical Center at designated community cancer coalition meetings.
- Serves on the Cancer Care Committee.
- Collaborates with other agencies and groups within the community to enhance patient care services.
- In collaboration with department stakeholders, develops business proposals to increase volume in key specialty services.
Coordination
- Participates in developing and implementing mechanisms for collaboration between staff members, physicians, and other clinical and administrative staff.
- Provides leadership to hospital-wide and nursing organization committees by either committee participation or direct leadership responsibility.
- Assumes a leadership role in a changing healthcare environment and participates in the change process at various levels in the organization.
- Responsible, in collaboration with IT to maintain and enhance data collection and analysis for the Cancer Center.
- Responsible for, in collaboration with Department managers, Finance and Purchasing, the maintenance and enhancements of the charge capture and revenue cycle activities for the Cancer Center.
Budgeting and Finance
- Translates strategic plans into an annual revenue and cost budget for the year.
- Partners with clinical and administrative leadership to develop performance improvement initiatives to hit budget targets.
Personnel Management
- Ensures (either directly or through supervisors) the highest standards for the selection, hiring, orientation and assignments of departmental staff.
- Provides ongoing coaching and mentoring to Directors and managers and staff to promote staff development and staff retention and the delivery of high quality care.
- Models RESPECT behavioral standards and holds staff accountable to same.
- Demonstrates ability to lead committees, task forces and other multi-disciplinary work groups.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Public Health or other related degree required. Master's Degree (or matriculation in a Master's program) preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
At least seven years of progressive administrative and management experience in a hospital setting required. Experience and knowledge leading cancer specialty services is strongly desired.

- Work requires a broad theoretical knowledge and work experiences that include: models of professional practice, contemporary trends and standards of nursing care, management of personnel and fiscal resources in a patient care setting, program development, implementation and evaluation.
