JOB STANDARDS:
The Activity Coordinator must have:
- A high school education, diploma, or GED
- Prior experience working as a member of a team in a recreational or activities program, preferably two years of experience gained while in a healthcare setting
- General knowledge, skills and appreciation of the arts, crafts, music, and/or ceramics. Familiarity with validation therapy, re-motivation techniques, working with residents with dementia, and/or reality orientation is strongly desired
- Flexibility in working holidays, evenings, and/or weekends
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
The Activities Coordinator will:
- Participate in the comprehensive assessment of the Residents’ needs and activities potential, taking into consideration the Residents’ ability and desire to take part in activity pursuits which maintain or improve physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being. These activities include any activity outside of ADLs to obtain a sense of well-being, providing benefits in the areas of self-esteem, pleasure, comfort, health education, creativity, success, and independence.
- Assist in planning, development, coordination, and implementation of varying levels of activities for individuals and groups according to their needs, abilities, desires, and interests. Oftentimes, these activities are planned and conducted while enlisting the cooperation and participation of staff and volunteers.
- Conduct recreational activities such as group exercise, music, singing, games, parties, crafts, cooking, religious activities, intellectual activities such as quizzes, reading, discussion groups, and community activities such as parties, holiday celebrations, tours, attendance at plays and movies, etc.
- Provide empowerment activities that promote increased self-respect by providing opportunities for self-expression, personal responsibility, and choice.
- Encourage and motivate residents to participate in meaningful individual and group activities to enhance their quality of life to their fullest potential.
- Conduct maintenance activities that provide a schedule of events to promote physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual wellness.
- Carry out supportive activities that provide stimulation or solace to residents who cannot generally benefit from either maintenance or empowerment activities.
- Provide adaptations for Residents with poor vision, hearing loss, decreased fine motor and physical skills to assist in the participation of activities to their fullest potential, e.g. eyeglasses, hearing aids, large print material, book holders, special seating during activities.
- Implement activity programs and interventions to assist the Residents in meeting treatment goals.
- Ensure the timely documentation of Resident participation in activities by fully and accurately recording progress and response to programs via charts, assessments, documents, and records as required by law and regulations, or to comply with the Home’s policies and procedures.
- Assume all duties, objectives, and goals of the department in the absence of the Director of Activities, while understanding and following existing lines of communication and authority.
- Assure that all Resident rights are maintained reporting issues of concern to administration.
- Maintain confidentiality of all Resident, departmental and organizational information, including personal healthcare information.
- Work effectively and cooperatively as a team member within the Department and with all departments or other disciplines.
- Supervise and provide direction to volunteers and outside groups as assigned by the Director of Activities.
- Drive facility bus or vehicles for special outings following all proper safety procedures when securing Residents with wheelchairs.
- Attend in-services and department meetings as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor and assist wherever needed.
