Government Relations (GR) seeks to advance Pew’s nonpartisan policy and research goals at all levels of government, in the United States and internationally. We focus on sharing the organization’s research and fact-based recommendations, shaping pragmatic strategies to achieve program objectives, and building relationships with key government officials to forge compromise and consensus on issues that make a difference to the public.
Position Overview
The manager of e-Advocacy will combine their digital advocacy skills, technical experience, and management ability to lead an established team to craft and distribute strategic digital communications to policymakers, thought leaders, and grassroots advocates designed to advance Pew’s mission-driven public policy priorities.
In particular, the manager of eAdvocacy will:
- Oversee a team and support their work across three main categories of work: policymaker outreach, online advocacy, and event promotion and coordination.
- Monitor staff performance, set strategic goals and facilitate professional development.
- Work with program teams to advance the development of policymaker outreach and advocacy campaigns.
- Promote digital advocacy tools and best practices throughout the institution.
- Coordinate with their peers across IT and external affairs.
This government relations position reports to the senior director of strategy and operations based in Pew’s Washington, DC, office. The position will participate in Pew’s core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will have flexibility to work from home the remainder of each week.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the country for which they are seeking employment without visa sponsorship.
Responsibilities
- Manage a team of dedicated staff, developing a collaborative team culture and encouraging professionalism and professional development.
- In partnership with Pew’s communications and program staff, create persuasive digital advocacy campaigns to motivate key stakeholders.
- Conduct stakeholder and power mapping to ensure persuasive digital advocacy messaging.
- Develop and execute integrated strategies to meet organizational and programmatic objectives using online communication tools.
- Ensure operational excellence, addressing issues with vendors and platforms, and upholding standards for effective email campaigns.
- Review materials and email copy for potential political and compliance concerns, suggesting optimizations as needed.
- Lead coordination meetings with other departments and vendors, conducting regular team meetings and weekly check-ins with individual staff.
- Incorporate best practices and emerging technology in testing, dynamic content, AI, and list segmentation for optimal message recipient experience.
- Establish core metrics, track and analyze performance data, delivering reports and key takeaways to relevant staff.
- Manage relationships and deliverables from vendors, assisting in evaluating contracts.
- Advocate for the eAdvocacy team in mid-level management meetings and present updates as needed.
- Work with communications colleagues to ensure an integrated approach to external affairs, incorporating eAdvocacy content into various channels.
- Host events to educate Pew staff on digital advocacy strategies, tools, and best practices.
- Contribute to and participate in tasks and special projects as assigned.
- Assist with building and distributing digital advocacy communications as needed.
- Help uphold and advance Pew’s commitment to DEI and respect in the workplace.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
- Generally, eight years of professional experience including staff, project and/or consultant management experience. A strong interest and potential to manage, inspire, and empower a team and individuals are required.
- Experience with online outreach and a proven track record in managing online communications programs, specifically using email. Demonstrated success managing vendors and suppliers is required.
- Strong strategic and tactical online advocacy and communication skills honed by previous web communications experience in either the for-profit or nonprofit arena.
- Experience with online advocacy platforms such as Phone2Action, Engaging Networks, Blackbaud, Blue State Digital, Salsa, or similar technologies. Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM tools. Knowledge of HTML, Adobe Design, and analytics software.
- Strong project management and organizational skills. Flexible with experience handling multiple projects simultaneously and setting priorities.
- Sound consultation and relationship management skills.
- Must have strong oral communications, writing, and research skills, with the ability to frame and draft concise written messages.
- Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices.
Travel
Minimal domestic travel anticipated.
Salary Range
$125,500 USD - $140,300 USD
The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pew’s commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay. The actual salary offered will take into consideration many factors including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills and experience, internal pay equity, and business need.
