Brief Description
This role is responsible for day-to-day operations and performance of the Corrugator, Die Cutting, and Printing equipment. The ideal candidate will possess a growth mindset, innate curiosity, and commitment to continual learning impacting operational effectiveness.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities
- Responsible for ensuring employees are utilizing safe manufacturing practices and are trained in accordance with company safety rules and guidelines. Facilitates department-wide safety training in coordination with Safety Manager and runs crew safety meetings. Participates in plant safety meetings. Prioritizes and promotes safety above all else.
- Responsible for manufacturing a quality product that meets customer and company quality requirements. Ensures that department employees are trained in QA/QC practices. Works with Quality Manager and QC Department on quality improvement initiatives and on corrective action to customer complaints. Oversees department-wide quality training and quality-related crew meetings.
- Leads team to attain maximum productivity and efficiency in the department through:
- Measurement and analysis of key production data.
- Overseeing and chairing productivity improvement meetings with crews.
- Communicating and posting key production numbers by shift, machine, operator, etc., against appropriate (and often crew-determined) goals.
- Efficient utilization of personnel.
- Establishing and reinforcing a level of accountability and expectation across all shifts.
- Implements waste control and measurement processes, from start through finished product. Focus on good material handling and operating practices to minimize waste, as well as communicating the dollar impact of waste. Holding crews accountable for driving to acceptable waste levels.
- Acts as point person for all vendors, contractors and visitors entering the facility on their departments’ behalf. Responsible for preparing their departments to handle customer and HACCP audits, municipal and customer inspections, plant tours, etc. Collaborates with other managers to coordinate and support audits and inspections.
- Collaborates with Engineering, and supplier to ensure the engineering, layout, installation, and start-up of new equipment is performed efficiently, cost-effectively and safely.
- Operates department in a cost-effective manner and promotes cost reduction across all shifts.
- Works with union representatives to find agreeable solutions to potential management/employee problems whenever possible. Upholds management’s rights through a strong knowledge of the labor agreement.
- Dedicates time to be present on the off shifts for the purposes of interacting with all employees, evaluating the manufacturing process, and providing training and guidance where needed. Maintains a solid floor presence. Must be willing to work flexible hours.
- Interacts with other departments and all personnel in a professional manner. Ensures that customer and vendor relationships are handled in a professional, ethical, and uncompromising manner.
- Responsible for ensuring, where applicable, the product safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and legality of all products produced and sold.
- Other duties as assigned to fulfill business needs.
Required Skills And Education
- Minimum 10 years spent in supervisory and management positions. Time spent in management of large-scale (greater than 100 employees) operations required.
- A thorough understanding of equipment processing, maintenance and troubleshooting equipment, employee training methods, waste control methodology, process improvement techniques and quality/food safety control.
- Proven track record of accomplishments and results in the areas of safety, productivity, and product quality.
- Experience working in a union environment strongly preferred.
- 4-year degree in a technical field strongly preferred.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, factory environment. Most of the time will be spent on the floor.
