Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, a national leader in clinical care, education, and research, is announcing the search for the Division Director of Rheumatology.
The Division Director of Rheumatology will oversee all operations of the division including education, clinical care, and research, with support from other administrative and faculty Division leaders. This position is ideal for a collaborative and transformational leader who can build on existing strengths within the Division and the vision to develop new collaborations and expand the research arm of the division. The successful candidate will have a strong background in academic leadership across the tripartite clinical, education, and research missions as well as experience in faculty development and mentoring, sustaining independent research funding, and a productive academic portfolio (marked through peer-reviewed research publications). The research focus can be basic, translational, or clinical in nature. The candidate will be highly collaborative and experienced in participating in and/or leading team science projects. The ideal candidate will have an established and funded program of research in an area relevant to Rheumatology, including (but not limited to) autoimmunity, immunology, musculoskeletal disorders. We will prioritize individuals whose work would create synergies for existing areas of focus on campus.
Additional qualifications include a national reputation in Rheumatology, a record of scholarship in the discipline, and documented success leading interdisciplinary initiatives.
The Division focuses on providing compassionate patient-centered care, conducting innovative research, and furthering the education of future clinicians in the specialty. Faculty members are actively involved in clinical research with multiple areas of expertise, integrating clinical care for patients in disease-specific clinics while leading collaborative research, both in Indiana and nationally. The Division also has been providing intensive clinical training and research opportunities through its fellowship program since 1976.
Position Overview
The Director reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Medicine and is responsible for the leading direction of the Division of Rheumatology. Additionally, the Director will:
- Shape the future of the Division by working with faculty and staff to develop and articulate the divisional vision and goals;
- Manage medical education and research in partnership with the Division Academic Administrator and department leaders (Vice Chairs) while also working with the Service Line Leader/Service Line Administrator on clinical operations;
- Develop and enact a plan for divisional expansion and program growth with an emphasis on research program expansion;
- Ensure the delivery of high-quality training and support faculty teaching enhancement;
- Maintain a high-quality academic environment and provide support for faculty research;
- Formulate and communicate recommendations for hiring, tenure, promotion, and retention of a diverse set of faculty and divisional staff;
- Facilitate growth of the fellowship program;
- Develop innovative collaborations across existing divisions, departments, centers and institutes;
- Maintain a divisional climate that is welcoming, diverse, and inclusive and encourages faculty and staff engagement, participation, collegiality, and innovation;
- Explore the future growth and development of academic/community partnerships in the Midwest region.

Basic Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for this position include a Doctorate or Terminal degree with at least three to five years of experience in leadership positions requiring financial and personnel administration. Requires previous experience in an academic environment at the level of a Medical Director or Division Director, a track record of program/curriculum development, and serving as a mentor and attending/supervising faculty. Outstanding academic credentials such as a track record of extramural research funding, academic experience appropriate for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, and eligibility for licensure and practice in the State of Indiana, if MD. Excellent institutional resources will be committed to the next division leader to strategically grow the divisional clinical, research, and educational programs.

- Academic credentials commensurate with appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
