JOB DESCRIPTION:
Joining the CNA team as the Consulting Director, PMO Governance (individual contributor), you will be responsible for defining, implementing, monitoring, and enhancing governance processes, frameworks and controls that enable effective and efficient portfolio, product, and project management practices. You will have the ability to interact and engage with all levels of the organization as you are part of a team who will be evolving these practices as the CNA technology organization adopts agile and SAFe methodologies.
This hybrid role is located in Chicago, IL.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
Portfolio Mgmt. Standards:
- Define portfolio, product, and project management standards, methodologies, and best practices to be followed by portfolio, product, and project teams across the organization for Agile and Waterfall delivery.
- Define, implement, continuously improve, and govern standards for SAFe Lean Portfolio Management PMO Roles, Portfolio Management Ceremonies, and LPM Governance.
- Establish governance processes and frameworks that enable effective and efficient portfolio, product, and project management practices globally.
- Review and analyze performance of existing processes and frameworks to continuously drive enhancements.
- Drive innovation and the adoption of new technologies or processes that can enhance portfolio, product, and project delivery efficiency and effectiveness.
Risk, Controls & Audits:
- Complete quarterly audits to ensure standards are consistently followed by portfolio delivery teams and provide analysis and recommendations to AVP Governance.
- Design, develop, and perform control owner role for all controls across the PMO functions.
- Perform reviewer/approval roles for all Planview related controls.
- Perform control submitter role for PMO Framework control (which is related to annual review of job aids, documentation, templates, procedures, etc. for the PMO).
- Ensure definitions and procedures for all PMO controls are reviewed, current, documented, and functioning as intended, in partnership with the Continuous Process Monitoring team.
- Work closely with the Continuous Process Monitoring team to complete PMO Risk Evaluations and address any outcomes/actions for improvement. Also, monitor new developments or recommended controls needed and implement as methodology and delivery models and technology change over time.
Tooling:
- Implement tooling to support reporting mechanisms to assess portfolio performance and monitor the overall health.
- Research and evaluate different PPM tools available in the market on an ongoing basis.
Training & Development:
- Develop and deliver training programs and workshops to enhance portfolio, product, and project management capabilities and promote adoption of best practices.
- Develop and deliver training programs, workshops, and coaching sessions for implementation of LPM practice including portfolio level ceremonies, metrics (including flow), tooling, templates.
- Ensure training modules are current and delivery teams complete required training for tools, processes and controls. Create documentation and knowledge base articles for ongoing reference and support.
- Partner with Tech Operations to create PMO development plans and training curriculum to the PMO organization based on needs of staff and changes to methodology, industry trends, and advancements in technology.
Vendor Partnership:
- Collaborate with Tech Ops Excellence Vendor Management team to develop and manage service level agreements for service providers of staff augmentation resources for the PMO.
- Partner with EPG team to implement new contract types to support Lean Portfolio Funding Models.
May perform additional duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationship: Typically reports to AVP, PMO Governance or above.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of governance standards, processes and controls required to support IT delivery organizations.
- Strong understanding of SAFe and LPM project management practices.
- Critical thinking skills and self-starter mindset with the ability to proactively identify opportunities and initiate action to enhance governance standards and evolve them with changing business needs.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and complexity; willingness to explore multiple solutions to a problem.
- Results driven individual with ability to develop and use collaborative relationships to facilitate accomplishment of PMO goals.
- Strong experience and understanding of project financial management and accounting principles.
- Understands complex financial concepts and has ability to generate data driven insights to support decision making.
- Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate with senior executives and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to present and contextualize information and data that can be consumed by senior leaders and C-Suite executives.
- Ability to explain technical jargon in simplified terms.
- Ability to work effectively in a matrix environment and influence both upward and cross-functionally.
- Insurance industry knowledge preferred.
Education & Experience
- At least 7+ years of experience in establishing and maintaining project governance, standards and controls for mid-large scale IT organizations.
- At least 5+ years of experience in conducting risk and controls assessments and driving enhancements based on observed results.
- At least 5+ years of experience in working with agile delivery teams.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline, or related work experience.
- Advanced degree preferred.
