The American Public Transportation Association (APTA), a private, nonprofit trade association representing the North American public transportation industry, is seeking a highly dynamic, engaged, and visionary General Counsel. This key leadership role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of APTA’s legal affairs, protecting its legal rights, and maintaining compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including managing relationships with outside counsel. Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the General Counsel is a vital member of APTA’s Leadership Team and supports the Board of Directors.
In this role, the General Counsel will manage all legal work related to operations, personnel, business development, contracts, compliance, and risk mitigation. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, association governance, management of regulatory programs, contract oversight, and providing internal legal support, member guidance, and legislative assistance.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Membership in a state bar or the District of Columbia bar.
- At least ten years of experience as an attorney.
- Familiarity with legal issues pertaining to 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) nonprofit associations.
- Experience with federal transportation law and regulations.
- Ability to travel to attend four major conferences, including the Legal Affairs Seminar.
Compensation and Benefits: APTA offers a competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance; life and disability insurance; paid time off; a 401(k) retirement plan; professional development opportunities; and commuter benefits to assist with public transportation costs. The annual base starting salary is expected to range between $190,400 and $253,900.
Work Location and Schedule: This position is based in Washington, D.C., with a hybrid work schedule. Employees are required to be in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the flexibility to select a third in-office day. The remaining two workdays can be remote. Please note that this schedule may be subject to change based on the needs of the Association.
