A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer
As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts. You will manage projects and guide your team through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and answer questions during construction.
Qualifications of a Principal Engineer:
- A Professional Engineering license in MA
- A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering
- At least 15 years of engineering experience developing construction documents and/or public agency construction administration
- At least 5 years serving in a project and/or design management role
- A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling and design of accessible public spaces
- A proven track record of past performance, delivering multiple large/complex projects on time and on budget
- Experience developing construction documents
- Experience in preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
- General experience leading multidisciplinary teams
- Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
- Experience in managing staff
- Proficiency in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads)
- Experience managing engineering projects in the Northeast
- Experience in preparing proposals and scope/fees
- Interest in business development
It would be a plus if you had some of the following:
- Professional Engineering license(s) in other Northeast states
- Exposure to construction management
- Experience analyzing and designing stormwater infrastructure
- Experience using stormwater design software
- Traffic engineering and Signal design experience
- Understanding of MUTCD standards
- Experience working on transit projects
- Experience in Complete Streets, bikeway, and crossing design
Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer
This full-time position typically works a hybrid schedule of 40 hours a week, with at least two to three days a week in the office.
