THE ROLE
The Ministry Chief Philanthropy Officer reports to the South Division Chief Philanthropy Officer. The incumbent oversees and leads the Foundation team. The Ministry Chief Philanthropy Officer is responsible for the overall development, coordination, facilitation and administration of all fundraising/philanthropy programs. The Ministry Chief Philanthropy Officer sets the strategic direction, establishes goals and objectives with clear milestones and procedures for achieving high levels of philanthropy to make meaningful impact to its Hospital/Medical Center. The incumbent is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and ensures that Foundation fundraising activities are developed in line with the strategic goals of the organization. As a key partner to the Chief Executive and the Foundation Board of Directors, the Ministry Chief Philanthropy Officer leads the ministry's Foundation, guides and engages the Foundation Board of Directors, leads and manages the philanthropy team, is able to develop and implement a strategic plan to impact fundraising on all levels, works in alignment with all philanthropy divisional teams, creates the right organizational structure to support philanthropy, focuses the Foundation on support of key organizational priorities and initiatives and serves as a known and trusted member of the communities served. The Ministry Chief Philanthropy Officer serves as an ambassador for the Hospital/Medical Center, helping to drive great confidence of various stakeholders in the philanthropic community, with a compelling case for support. The Ministry Chief Philanthropy Officer also serves as the chief fundraiser, managing a portfolio and securing major and principal. The incumbent also works in concert with the South Division Chief Philanthropy Officer and works collaboratively with other Ministry Chief Philanthropy Officers and the South Division Philanthropy teams.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Functions as a Visionary strategic thinker in setting the strategic and annual operating plan to achieve the goals of the Foundation. Develops teams to achieve a high degree of success in executing the strategic plan and delivering on results. Develops and administers the Foundation's budget consistent with the operating and strategic plans. Develops annual tactical goals, objectives and performance metrics and key performance indicators to track Foundation success.
- Develops, secures approval of, and successfully implements effective short and long range strategic philanthropic plans designed to enable the hospital in fulfilling its mission and achieve its strategic objectives through increased philanthropic support. Plans and implements capital campaigns, comprehensive campaigns, endowment campaigns, annual giving campaigns, major gift solicitations, fundraising events and planned giving programs, with effective planning and drive to results.
- Maintains professional contact with community organizations, other institutions, associations and organizations that affect hospital development programs. Maintains open communication with other foundation executives and staff within the Providence, ensuring the exchange of ideas and information that would help promote success in all foundations. Responsible for supporting the achievement of regional Fund Development Goals.
- Works effectively with the Foundation Board of Directors in their responsibilities as the fundraising arm of the hospital. Develops an effective structure for the Board; ensures that the Board is able to achieve its goals and priorities, consistent with the philanthropy strategic plan. Assists the Board in creation and implementation of policies and procedures that will ensure utilization of the most effective, economical and ethical methods of fundraising. Organizes the Board for maximum efficiency and ensures that Foundation Board Members' time and talents are well-utilized to make optimal philanthropic impact. Recruits new Board Members as needed.
- Responsible for comprehensive leadership of the Foundation's planned estate giving program overseeing the planned giving professional staff, the identification of qualified prospects, establishment of industry appropriate metrics, marketing of planned giving as a vehicle of support and execution of gifts that support the funding priorities of the Hospital/Medical Center.
- Serves as a member of the Ministry Executive Leadership Team. Works collaboratively with the senior leadership team and with medical staff leaders to identify organizational priorities, including clinical program development and capital needs. Confers with the appropriate hospital leadership to identify key organizational needs and develops presentations, case statements and compelling stories for support from prospective donors. Works in close collaboration with the marketing department, to ensure consistent brand identity in philanthropic efforts; directs preparation of all printed materials.
- Provides leadership to Foundation team. Interviews, hires, trains, directs and evaluates the performance of Foundation staff. Structures the Foundation staff for maximum effectiveness and motivates and develops a strong team and leads the Foundation staff to maximize their fundraising expertise. Provides leadership for all comprehensive fundraising and other fund development programs.
- Responsible for the development of major gift prospects for the medical center and for maintaining and building relationships with existing donors.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in a Related field; or equivalent educ/experience
- Master's Degree in a Related field (preferred)
- Upon hire: Certification by the National Society for Fund Raising Executives (preferred)
- Participation in courses on fund development
- 8 years of experience in managing and directing fund development programs
- 5 years of Philanthropy-related leadership
- 5 years of experience in running a comprehensive fund development organization including comprehensive campaigns, major, principal and planned gift programs, fundraising events, annual giving and grants procurement
- Extensive knowledge of Philanthropy, major and planned gifts, grant proposal preparation, accounting and statistics in order to express ideas clearly and to develop strategies and plans for long-range and immediate fund development programs
- Strong strategic skills with the ability to develop, articulate and communicate a strategic vision to the Board, staff, community and hospital leadership team; leads and facilitates Foundation team members' success in strategic objectives
- Expertise in achieving success with Major Gifts, planned giving and enabling transformational gifts
- Advanced interpersonal skills necessary in order to deal effectively and persuasively with a variety of influential internal and external contacts when eliciting cooperation and support for the medical center
- Strong leadership and organizational skills to lead the board of directors, volunteers, and staff of the Foundation
- Advanced analytical skills necessary in order to determine effective fund development strategies, identify potential sources of contributions and develop short- and long-term development goals and objectives of the hospital
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
