The Legal Affairs department at Santa Fe College is seeking an Associate General Counsel who, under the direction of the General Counsel, is responsible for exercising discretion in representing the college and advising its employees with respect to various legal matters, including all areas of higher education and charter/secondary school law. The Associate General Counsel also reviews and develops contracts and other legal documents as well as conducts research to provide recommendations used to establish rules, policies, procedures and administrative guidelines of the college.
Responsibilities and duties include:
- Reviews, revises, and drafts contracts which may include legal research.
- Conducts legal research, which includes interpretation of primary and secondary law sources in areas of higher education and charter/secondary school law.
- Uses excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey research results, provide guidance to General Counsel, and represent the Legal Affairs division as needed.
- Conducts training for members of the college community.
- Maintains client confidentiality.
- Assists with information management, document retention, filing public notices, and other compliance related items.
- Gathers information and responds to public records requests, subpoenas, court papers, and other legal actions.
- Analyzes and reviews, revises, and drafts College Rules, procedures, and administrative guidelines.
- Serves on college committees and assists in gathering information, reviewing policies and/or making recommendations to the General Counsel.
- Assists with administrative and organizational tasks when necessary.
- Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
- Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Reports to: Senior Vice President, Chief of Staff, and General Counsel, Legal Affairs
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: A Juris Doctor degree and one (1) year of related work experience as an Attorney or a combination of related education and/or related Attorney experience equal to eight (8) years. Must be licensed to practice law in the state of Florida at time of hire.
Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted.
Preferred: Prior experience working in an educational environment, such as higher education and charter/secondary school. Contract management experience and can demonstrate organizational skills related to law office or other administrative management.
