What You'll Do:
The Chief Transmission Engineer will oversee and support the implementation of effective and innovative solutions associated with the study, planning, design, licensing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of the company’s electric transmission line and substation projects and operational assets. This includes one of the largest underground and underwater high-voltage projects to be built in recent times. Additionally, the Chief Transmission Engineer will conduct and oversee analyses to assess the reliability and performance of the company’s transmission assets, implement measures to enhance system reliability, and assist construction project leadership and supply chain with materials cost estimation and selection. This is an opportunity for a senior transmission engineer to contribute to a high-performance, diverse team from procuring materials through line energization. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in ensuring transmission infrastructure safety, reliability, and efficiency and employing best-in-class engineering standards.
Responsibilities
Oversee the study, planning, design, specifications, evaluations, and calculations for all transmission line and substation projects.
Review and approve contractor and consultant engineering documents and drawings.
Provide technical assistance and support equipment acceptance review.
Develop and maintain the company’s engineering standards.
Maintain relationships with industry counterparts for reliability best practices.
Prepare, manage, record, and confirm accurate documentation of company assets.
Perform and oversee analyses to assess the reliability and performance of the company’s operational assets and report results to executive leadership.
Implement initiatives to enhance system reliability and address any gaps.
Job Duties / Essential Functions
Transmission Line Design and Planning
Oversee and approve outsourced engineering project design from conception through completion, including technical project needs and requirements, relevant calculations, and feasibility, reliability, and economic evaluations and studies.
Support the outsourced transmission planning function performing transmission forecasting, load flow modeling of assets, identifying violations and developing solutions, and developing preliminary scoping documents for reliability projects.
Collaborate with the company’s construction projects organization on the overall layout, configuration, and specifications for materials, equipment, and construction methods of transmission lines, substations, and related infrastructure.
Provide technical leadership and conduct comprehensive reviews for equipment acceptance throughout the construction phase of project lifecycles.
Engineering Standards and Regulatory Compliance
Administer, review, create, and uphold the company’s best-in-class engineering standards and ensure they align with industry best practices.
Coordinate with and oversee outsourced engineering resources that develop and update transmission line and substation standards for contracted work.
Work with the environmental and safety leads to ensure transmission line and substation projects and operational assets comply with the applicable federal, state, and municipal regulatory requirements.
Reliability, Performance Analysis, and Reporting
Perform transmission reliability studies, including assessment of equipment performance and identify opportunities to enhance system performance .
Provide technical guidance and support to the operations and maintenance (“O&M”) team regarding the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and resolution of transmission line and substation system components.
Monitor and report on the company’s asset reliability key performance indicators (“KPIs”) in the NERC Transmission Availability Data System (“TADS”) and the Mis-operation Information Data Analysis System (“MIDAS”).
Establish and foster relationships with industry stakeholders engaged in bulk power system (“BPS”) reliability challenges by reviewing lessons learned and implementing leading practices.
What You Bring:
Minimum of 15 years of overhead and underground transmission line design. Experience in both HVAC and HVDC systems is a plus.
Deep expertise in engineering designs, advanced principles, theory, industry practices, and complex field-testing equipment.
Demonstrated knowledge of transmission design and conductor and cable rating software, including but not limited to PSSE, PSLF, PLS CADD, PLS POLE, and MFAD.
Proficiency in conducting thorough quality reviews of detailed engineering documents and specifications.
Broad base of knowledge regarding industry codes, standards, guides, and regulations, including IEEE/ANSI, NESC, and FERC and NERC regional requirements.
Deep understanding of the ISO transmission planning process – experience with the NYISO is .
Extensive experience overseeing work performed by junior engineers and contractors.
Familiarity with the review, study, assessment, and reporting of transmission reliability (adequacy and operating), of the interconnected BPS, both existing and as planned.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and present information in a precise and concise manner to regulators, external stakeholders and contractors, internal executive leadership and company members, and members of the Board.
Strong statistical, analytical, critical thinking, organization, and task management skills.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
Professional Engineer (“P.E.”) licensure – New York
