Description
The Renthal Lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join our efforts to understand the genomic and epigenomic mechanisms that establish neuronal identity and how these processes contribute to nerve repair after injury. Our long-term vision is to leverage these molecular insights to build new gene therapies that improve nerve repair and chronic pain after nerve injury. We are searching for a Research Lab Manager with wet-lab experience, strong communication organizational skills, and a passion for science. This position is particularly well suited for a talented individual who enjoys optimizing and tackling challenging problems with logic, cutting-edge technology, and teamwork. The Lab Manager will be responsible for directing lab operations, which includes onboarding/offboarding and training of research staff, inventory management and ordering, financial oversight, and safety/compliance/ethics. The Lab Manager will also be responsible for organizing/maintaining shared laboratory resources including common reagents, protocols, mouse lines, and equipment. These operational responsibilities are likely to occupy ~60% of the Lab Manager’s time and will be supported by a collaborative team that includes Dr. Renthal, an administrative assistant, a research coordinator, research assistants, and high-quality coffee/espresso/tea. In addition to lab operations, ~40% of the Lab Manager’s time will be dedicated to research and helping to co-author/patent resulting discoveries in collaboration with postdoctoral fellows, students, and research assistants within the lab. This position would be ideal for someone with significant prior laboratory experience who seeks the flexibility of an academic position to apply their organizational, leadership, and research skills to improve our understanding of the nervous system.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the coordination of all regulatory, compliance, record keeping, and safety activities for the lab.
- Supervises operation of the laboratory, including supply inventory/ordering, interfacing with vendors, and overseeing the efficient use of grant funds.
- Oversees onboarding/offboarding, orientation, and training, and ensuring that we are friendly neighbors to nearby labs.
- Laboratory space organization and management.
- Maintenance and record keeping of shared lab reagents including plasmids, chemicals, viruses, antibodies, freezers, mouse lines, and their import/export from/to other groups.
- Maintenance of laboratory equipment and service contracts.
- Direct space management of lab’s mouse colony and ensure lab compliance with colony management.
- Assist with editing grants, manuscripts, presentations, and protocols.
- Conduct experiments to advance research projects and maintain detailed records.
- Review literature on an ongoing basis.
- Reports on lab management and research progress at regular meetings with Dr. Renthal.
- Contribute to scientific literature and publication/patenting of findings as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for supporting Dr. Renthal in supervising staff including hiring, training and evaluating and directing this team to optimize lab operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS required.
- Motivated, passionate about organization, team building, and process improvement.
- Computational proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and/or Google Docs/sheets.
- Minimum of 3 years of wet lab experience including experience with cloning and handling mice. Lab management experience is preferred but not required.
