Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all. The Hardware Systems Engineering team at Aurora is seeking a candidate with expertise in requirements development, influencing hardware architecture, system verification & validation, and integration of safety- and mission-critical hardware and software systems.
Aurora’s Systems Engineers work closely with engineering design teams to develop sound and implementable design concepts and requirements. Collaboration and teamwork are essential for bringing various stakeholders together and guiding implementation decisions across different disciplines. The successful candidate will be a self-starter and able to work independently, learn, tailor and execute processes, and perform in a collaborative environment.
In this role, you will
- Define requirements at system, subsystem and hardware module level in collaboration with internal stakeholders, external OEM partners and/or suppliers. Key focus areas include Thermal and allied systems.
- Act as an owner for driving technical discussions, ensuring alignment on functional requirements and closely working with the implementation teams (e.g. Electrical, Embedded, Mechanical) to satisfy the functional requirements.
- Define requirements by providing reasonable rationale by applying first principles and data analysis in collaboration with the subject matter experts.
- Manage requirement traceability and decomposition.
- Manage requirements change control, change propagation, and releases.
- Develop system FMEAs to drive requirement gap analysis and recommend missing requirements and design actions (e.g. onboard diagnostics, fault detection, fault response, etc.).
- Write design documents to evaluate new features/architecture, drive engineering reviews and ultimately derive a clear set of requirements and technical specifications.
- Facilitate cross-functional system development activities among the working groups consisting of systems, safety, software, embedded firmware and hardware design teams including contribution to design reviews, reconciliation of requirements and producing high quality documentation with traceability.
- Develop verification and validation test plans and demonstrate coverage against requirements, in collaboration with hardware and safety teams.
- Execute system level testing, perform log analysis (on CAN logs, autonomy logs) to get coverage against existing requirements and/or inform new requirements.
- Prepare and present technical reports for management.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Mechatronics, or Computer Science Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
- 2+ years of industry experience in systems engineering.
- 2+ years of industry experience in system test planning and execution (verification and validation).
- Strong organizational abilities to drive and manage requirements end to end.
- Strong organizational and communication skills to effectively coordinate with local and remote teams and quickly drive progress.
- Strong experience in generating system and module level requirements, functional decomposition, dFMEAs and MSRs.
- Ability to complete system analyses to deep dive into the technical problem statement and recommend a path forward using structured design documents.
- Ability to quickly gain a deep understanding of system architecture and product specifications including system redundancy designs and high availability systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Systems experience in autonomous driving technology and robotics.
- Proficiency with electrical and communication bus debug and test equipment; including: oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, JTAG tools, CANalyzer, thermocouples, etc.
- Familiarity with automotive design, qualification, validation, and reliability requirements.
- Familiarity with model-based systems engineering, FTA, DFA and hazard safety analysis.
- Prior experience in electrical design development including PCB layout, schematic design, wiring design and embedded software design development.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring and assembly drawings.
The base salary range for this position is $156,000 - $234,000 per year. Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
