As an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to a specific population of patients. The perioperative registered nurse designs, coordinates, and delivers care to meet the identified needs of all patients during the perioperative phase. They assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate the outcome of interventions based on criteria that support a standard of care. This role addresses the impact of the surgical experience on the patient's physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual responses.
Essential Duties:
- Adherence to Universal Patient Safety Goals in all areas of practice.
- Adheres to safety standards of labeling medication on and off the sterile field.
- Consistently transfers scientific knowledge in applying the nursing process and formulates care plans for direct/indirect care.
- Performs essential nursing skills.
- Delegates tasks to others based on scope of practice, preparation, and capability.
- Evaluates effectiveness of care and modifies plans accordingly.
- Acts as an advocate by initiating actions to advance the plan of care.
- Ensures electrical/laser/radiology safety and intraoperative MRI safety.
- Follows correct site surgery/surgical time out standards (Universal Protocol).
- Operates autoclave/Steris correctly with appropriate documentation.
- Communicates information using SBAR in hand-off communication.
- Accurately documents patient charges, implant records, pathology specimens, and preoperative records in a timely manner.
- Utilizes Cerner system for documentation and updates preference cards as needed.
- Adheres to policy for instruments/sponges/sharps count.
- Practices according to USC's collaboration principles and demonstrates respectful teamwork.
- Follows policies, Title 22, and JCAHO Standards.
- Participates in the development of professional practice, including nursing committees and unit-based improvement projects.
- Demonstrates knowledge about current policies and shares awareness about new trends/technology.
- Maintains specialty carts and ensures supplies are organized and cleaned.
- Prepares surgical suites daily for procedures.
- Facilitates the smooth flow of surgical interventions.
- Participates in hospital and departmental-wide PI activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) *Grandfathered from BSN if hired prior to 12/2019.
- 1 year of operating room nursing experience in an acute setting immediately prior to application.
- Excellent communication skills, including proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and ability to understand and perform duties in accordance with policies and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing) Valid California Registered Nursing license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) must be obtained within 30 days of hire if not already certified.
The hourly rate range for this position is $41.00 - $88.00.
